Jason Spieker snapped a 4-4 tie with ninety seconds left in the game to give Cherokee a 5-4 win over Eastern. With the victory Alec Zucker completed his regular season at 9-0-4. Zucker, who shares the goaltending duties with freshman Dan Navarra, will be one of the net-minders in this week’s Junior-Senior Showcase at Hollydell on Friday evening. Cherokee jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Anthony Santisi and Anthony Williams. Matt Herbert, who led the Vikings with two goals, finished a 2-on-1 break with Billy Bascou late in the period to cut the lead to 2-1. Zucker had stoned Bascou earlier in the period on a break.

With the period winding down, Max Huffnagle made a good play at the point to keep the puck in and his shot was put home by Tyler Dringus and the lead was 3-1 heading into the second period. Bascou scored five minutes in to cut the deficit to 3-2. But Josh Westrom restored the two goal lead midway through the period and we headed into the final period at 4-2. A quick goal by Josh Weinberg as Zucker had trouble handling the puck brought Eastern to within 4-3. Herbert tied the game at 4-4 as he put home a rebound of a shot by Cameron Dougherty. That set the stage for Spieker’s goal. And Zucker made that stand as he robbed Bascou of a tying goal in the final seconds.
