I just returned from a family vacation and had a voice mail from Coach Macchione of Washington Township that he and his son Chris had resigned. This comes on the heels of 2 days prior to my vacation, I was the guest speaker at the banquet for Washington Township hockey club, where my speech was centered around the job Coach Macchione and Chris had done over the last four years, 64-11-6, one championship. I spoke about the courage it took by Coach Macchione to suspend the second leading scorer for conduct detrimental to his team and thus hurting his clubs chances in the playoffs. I don’t pretend to know the intricacies of running a youth hockey club, but I would think that besides wins and losses, also important is the development of the players as young men.

Alex Zucker stopped all 27 shots and Blake Hamilton scored his first goal of the season as Cherokee blanked Washington Township 2-0 at Hollydell on Friday night. The loss eliminated Township from the tournament. Township dominated the first period out-shooting Cherokee 16-2, but Zucker made several big stops, including stoning Ryan Marker down low to keep the game scoreless through the first period. Defensively Cherokee did an outstanding job in shutting down Eddie Sarin, constantly shadowing him and always putting a body on him when he tried to set-up in the slot.

Coming into the game Washington Township was averaging eight goals per game but from the opening face-off it was quite clear that Holy Cross was not going to allow Washington Township to operate down low in the offensive zone and that part of the strategy worked as Township won 4-0. The problem stemmed from the lack of offense, as Holy Cross only had one shot each of the first two periods. Almost the entire first period was played in the Holy Cross zone and goalie CJ Byrd played strong in nets and just allowed a goal by Louie DeAngelo. Byrd stopped 12 shots and Holy Cross blocked at least another 12 shots while allowing the Township defenseman to run the offense.
