Council Rock South scored a power play goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game as they defeated Washington Township 5-4 in a cross-over game between two of the top teams in the tri-state area. Township won an earlier meeting 3-1. Patrick Grilli and Steve Junod each scored two goals for CRS; Jonathan Smith led Township with two goals. Smith gave Township a 1-0 lead just thirty seconds into the game, but that lead was short-lived as CRS scored a power play goal with Greg Aquaro getting the tally.

CRS took a 2-1 lead midway through the period with Junod getting his first on the night. Township tied the game late in the period as Garret Quinn, on a nice pass from Ben Basalma got the equalizer. CRS dominated the second period, taking 18 shots, but thanks to strong play in nets by Ryan McCusker, CRS only scored once, that one by Grilli to take a 3-2 lead into the third period. Basalma tied the score just twenty seconds into the period, but CRS would retake the lead about five minutes later as Junod put home a rebound of a shot by Grilli. Smith got the equalizer about two minutes later as Justin Cogbill used his quickness to keep the puck in the zone and set-up Smith.

Then with just under four minutes remaining, Grilli banged home the game winner with CRS on the power play. Township pulled the goalie in the final minute but despite their efforts could not get the equalizer.

Notes: CRS is undefeated in league play in the Suburban League at 15-0-1. Could be a Flyers Cup preview of the two top rated teams. McCusker’s strong play just validates Coach Glick’s decision to give him the start in the playoffs.
