Washington Township coming off a strong season in the SJHSIHL came into the Flyers Cup as a #3 seed, and looked to advance into the semi-finals, but strong goaltending by Springfords’ Peter Esslinger, who stopped 37 shots led to a 4-2 defeat of the Minutemen. Sean McCabe scored the lone goal of the first period on the power play as Township carried much of the play but failed to dent Esslinger.

Alec Posner and Tom Kisela made it 3-0 for Springford with goals five minutes apart before Township got on the board. Eric Naccarelli converted a nice pass from Jonathan Smith from behind the net to cut the deficit to 3-1 with just under four minutes left in the second period. McCabe got that one back about one minute later to make it 4-1. Ben Basalma scored late in the period to cut the lead to 4-2.

Springford played defensive most of the third period and when Township had some opportunities, Esslinger was there to shut the door. Despite out-shooting Springford 11-1 in the period Township was held scoreless.

Notes: Cherokee is still alive as they defeated Downingtown East 7-5 and will play top seed Council Rock South in the semi-finals. How cool would that have been if Township and Cherokee met in the championship?
