The long awaited start to the regular season for Washington Township began on Halloween night as they opened with a 6-0 win against Black Horse. Frank Hughes and Jonathan Smith led the offense with two goals each, Doug Sanders added a goal and three assists and Ryan McCusker kept Black Horse off the scoreboard. Black Horse, a Tier II club, suffers its first loss of the year. Sanders opened the scoring for the Minutemen scoring a power play goal five minutes into the contest. Just eighteen seconds later Sanders assisted on Smith’s first goal of the year and the lead was 2-0.
Township was dominant in the opening period as they out-shot Black Horse 16-2. The lead grew to 3-0 as Jason Smith scored an unassisted goal in the final three minutes of the period. After a scoreless second period, Hughes would score two goals in a span of four minutes, the first one on the power play with Sanders getting the helper and it was a 4-0 game. Just about three minutes later Smith got his second of the night for a 5-0 advantage. Hughes closed out the scoring about one minute later and Township had a successful opening night with a 6-0 win.
Notes: With a late start to their season, Township will play 2 games a week to catch up; this Friday they play Lenape/RV, next Monday will have their first test as they meet Cherokee at the Skate Zone in Voorhees.
