Matt Olbrich had three goals and two assists as Moorestown outscored Williamstown 9-8 in an offensive display put on at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Jonathan Ruiz led Williamstown with three goals and three assists. The teams combined for nine goals in the third period.

The teams exchanged goals in the opening minute of the first period, a preview of what was to come. John Yedman notched his seventh goal of the season to give Moorestown a 1-0 lead, but just seconds later Williamstown tied the game as Kyle Parks would get his first of two on the evening to tie the game at 1-1. Ruiz gave Williamstown a 2-1, all on sheer hustle, with his team down a man, he stole the puck at center ice and flew around the defenseman and his quick shot gave the Braves a 2-1 lead.

Ruiz’s blast midway through the period gave Williamstown a 3-1 lead, but Olbrich cut it to 3-2 as he broke down the right side and found the short side for his first goal of the night. Early in the second period Allen Haynes, on a nice feed from Jake DiStasio gave the Braves a 4-2 lead. Olbrich put home a rebound of a shot by Bill Sulpizio to bring Moorestown to within 4-3, scoring on the power play. Seconds later Eric Schwartz tied the game at 4-4 as we headed in the final period.

With a two-man advantage early in the third period, Moorestown capitalized on both ends of the power play, with Tyler Tavormina connecting on both blasts from the point to give Moorestown the lead at 6-4. DiStasio cut that to 6-5 at the nine minute mark and just about one minute later after Ruiz was stopped on a break, Anthony Scudder was there to put home the rebound, his first goal of the season and it was 6-6. Ruiz completed his hat trick fifteen seconds later and the Braves led 7-6. Olbrich would get his third on the power play to tie the game at 7-7. Then Moorestown scored two goals thirty seconds apart, one by Sulpizio, shorthanded and one by Mike Katz to take a 9-7 advantage with just over two minutes left. Parks would bring the Braves to within 9-8 with just eighteen seconds left, but Williamstown just ran out of time.

Notes: Although it’s hard to say that a goalie played well after surrendering eight goals, but Vada Mangum, who faced 48 shots, made several big saves down low to help preserve the win for Moorestown.
