Washington Township fell to Cherokee 5-4 at Hollydell on Friday night and when they look back on this loss, going 1 for 8 on the power play just won’t get it done. Missing Jonathan Smith didn’t help either, as one of the stalwarts on the man advantage, but at the end of the day, there were many opportunities. Pat Curiale scored one minute into the game, his first of two on the night, to give Township an early lead. Carl Seitz would score his first goal of the season about two minutes later to tie the score at 1-1.
Midway through the period Garrett Quinn scored on a breakaway to give Township a 2-1 advantage. But Jason Spieker scored a short-handed goal to tie the score at 2-2 heading into the second period. Dylan Bradley would give Cherokee a 3-2 scoring his first of two on the power play. Bradley added his second in the final minute of the period as Cherokee took a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Cole Zucker scored an early third period goal to give the Chiefs a 5-2 lead. Curiale cut the lead to 5-3 at the nine minute mark jamming home a shot by Quinn. Township would have a few power play chances to cut into the lead, but failed to do so. They finally converted on their eighth and final chance in the last two minutes as Kevin Mello one-timed a shot on a nice pass from Mike Lorence to make it 5-4. And despite pulling the goalie for an extra attacker, Township could not get the equalizer.
Notes: Next up for Township is a date with Shawnee on Monday night at Voorhees, another tough test. After that they have games against Mainland and Holy Cross, two winnable games and a meeting with Williamstown right before Christmas.
