Washington Township opened its playoff run with a 3-1 win against Shawnee on Monday night in SJHSIHL double elimination action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Ryan McCusker stopped 20 shots, including a penalty shot and Township got goals from Doug Sanders, Jason Smith and Garrett Quinn. After a scoreless first period Mack Kaiser was awarded a penalty shot by referee Tim Holz after being dragged down from behind on a breakaway. McCusker stoned him to keep the game scoreless and about one minute later Sanders scored down low with Pat Curiale getting the assist.
Kaiser would get the tying goal with about four minutes left as he scored from in tight and we headed into the third period tied at 1-1. Both teams were playing defense first, waiting for the other team to make a mistake. Township took advantage of their opportunity as they scored on the power play as Smith followed up a shot by Kevin Mello with about ten minutes left. McCusker made several big stops down the stretch and Quinn sealed the game with an empty net goal in the final seconds. Next up for Township is a game against Moorestown at the Igloo on Friday night. The teams split their two games in the regular season.
