Sam Strippolli scored two goals and Brandon Balsama had a goal and assist as Washington Township defeated Unionville 5-2 in a cross-over game with a team from PA. Unionville plays in the EPIHA league and is currently 4-2-1 and in 3rd place and has the second leading scorer in the league on their team in forward Matt Kowash. Township has been up and down this season and has a group of young freshman that Coach Glick has been playing occasionally, Strippolli however has only appeared in one league game so far, tonight’s performance should warrant more varsity ice time.

Chris Cozzan opened the scoring as his wrap around shot found the short side for a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. Strippolli made it 2-0 as he and Balsama worked hard behind the net to maintain control and Strippolli put home Balsama’s pass for a 2-0 lead. Unionville was awarded a penalty shot late in the period but Zachary Burkhardt stoned the shooter to keep it 2-0. Gabe Masters scored on a breakaway for Unionville to cut the Township lead to 2-1 heading into the third period. Balsama converted on the power play on a nice pass from Donovan Haslett to give Township a 3-1 lead. Just thirty seconds later Unionville made it 3-2, but Strippolli would bang home his second of the night with Haslett getting his second helper. Jarrett Wharton scored on a shot from the slot to finish out the scoring.

Notes: Playing cross-over games with PA teams has become a norm for Township and is important when seeding for the Flyers Cup. Good win against a good PA team. Now if Coach Glick can get this kind of performance in the league games, Minutemen could make some noise come playoff time.
