Donovan Haslett scored two goals to lead Washington Township over Cherokee 4-2 before a partisan crowd at Hollydell on Friday night. It was the junior forwards’ first multiple goal game for the varsity and he picked a good night to do it. Cherokee took a 1-0 lead at the five minute mark of the first period as Anthony Salvatore had the puck deflect off his body and past Township goalie Zachary Burkhardt for a 1-0 lead. Haslett would tie the game three minutes later scoring on a breakaway with Jarrett Strickon getting the assist. Township did a good job defensively on Boomer Miller, the league’s leading scorer and we began the second period all even.

Haslett, on a pass from Chris Cozzan scored on the power pay midway through the second period to give Township the lead for good at 2-1. Brandon Balsama and Nick Urban created the third goal with hard work behind the net and Urban was able to score from down low and the lead was 3-1. Miller responded for Cherokee just over one minute later with his division leading 16th of the season and Cherokee was to within 3-2. With the period winding down Jarrett Wharton ripped a shot from the slot into the net and a 4-2 lead. Despite some good opportunities in the third period, Burkhardt closed the door and Township would go into the holiday break in first place.

Notes: The 4 time defending champ Chiefs are just 5-5-2 and have scored just 47 goals at the break. In the previous 2 seasons Cherokee has had 85 goals at the break last season and 96 goals at the break two years ago. Clearly they need to pick up the offense, but with all teams making the playoffs, there is still time for them to regroup and get going. Township has moved into first place and has a one point lead over both Clearview and Cherokee having played three less games. Happy Holidays!!
