Wow, this post is to set the record straight. A lot has been said here. I invite anyone to come to the club’s board meetings where they can discuss any issue they have. I have from day one encouraged everyone to attend the board meetings and be involved in the club.
Canes2345, your comment about “2 of the worst players on the team have parents on the board” is wrong. Never should anyone be putting a kid down. I may have seen you at one of the meetings, but if you were there you didn’t bring up this issue. As far as your statements on Mr. Hughes and Cogbill go, I have known Frank Hughes for 6 years. He has dedicated his time to the club as a coach, and then a board member. If Frank Hughes is guilty of anything, it would be being overzealous at times, because he tries to do what he can for the good of the club. Al Cogbill was asked to become part of the board and agreed to do so. He has been an asset to the club. He is dedicated and stays on top of things. These are characteristics that any club would want of their board members.
Let’s go back over the recent history of the club. I took over as club president from Brian Moore three years ago. Brian was the club president for several years and has a wealth of knowledge. Every year I had asked for coaching applications. This was not done because I was unhappy with Coach Macchione, but it’s required. One of the years no one except Coach Macchione put in for the position, and no interview was conducted. This year there were three candidates for the position. I selected a committee which consisted of two board members, Frank Hughes and Al Cogbill, and Mr. Moore. The committee did the interviews and submitted a recommendation to the full board, where the choice was made to pick Coach Glick. Coach Macchione had called a few days prior to a decision on the pick and asked to be taken out of the process. As in the past, the head coach puts the names for the assistant coaches to the board for approval. Since Coach Glick wanted to have Hughes and Cogbill as his assistants, both were excused from the process of approving the assistants. The remaining board members had quite a discussion about the assistant coaches. Mr. Hughes and Cogbill were approved as coaches. I had discussion with both board members/coaches about their actions as coaches and how there could be an appearance of a conflict. They were told they need to separate themselves from the coaching duties and board duties, and if at anytime there is a conflict, they need to excuse themselves from that action. Now Canes2345, I too do see how it could be seen as an issue with the board members being a coach. We’ve had this in the club in the past. Both Mr. Hughes and myself have been listed as assistant coaches for Coach Macchione the last two years. Other clubs in the league still have the same scenario of coaches as board members today. This is why it is so important to have open meetings where members can attend and get accurate information.
People may think they want to be involved with the club, but I have found they rarely do. They don’t show up for the meetings. They would rather like to sit on the sidelines and complain. That is counterproductive to the club moving forward, just like some of these posts here. If anyone has solid proof that Coach Glick, Hughes, or Cogbill had put this grand plan in place from the beginning to kick out Coach Macchione, and then have the three of them take over the club with the power play, please come forward and let me know, and I will take appropriate action. I had a long discussion with Mr. Moore about the interview process. I will be happy to discuss it at our next club meeting on Sept 15 7PM at Hollydell.
Mike C. , I do know you and I know when you state “well said”, you are not talking about the kids being two of the worst on the team, but of “Pretty Funny how that happens”. You have always insisted on being positive about the kids, and you have been fair in your reporting..
Was it time for a change at the coaching position in the club? Was Coach Glick the correct choice? Time will tell. It’s also time for this club to move forward, as we have been doing in the past. If you care about this club, get involved, come to the meetings, express your concerns and displeasures, and hear directly from me what is going on. I am sure once you do, and you have all the FACTS, you will have a better understanding of what is going on. You won’t get all that here on this web site, sorry Mike. You also need to come to the meeting to get ALL the information.
