Re: Fighting in High School Hockey?

First we will agree to disagree. In stating that there is a fight in 4 out of 5 games, not sure where you got that stat, but in 14 games from Saturday there were fights in 7 games, again these are Professionals who get paid, some guys specifically to be the enforcer. Secondly a few years back there was a lot of fighting and the league implemented rules to address that issue and that's how they have worked. Finally you are right on one issue, the attendance is down, but not because there is no fighting. With no co-operation from the schools in letting the student body know that their is a game on a particular day, or with the lack of competitive games played each night these are contributing factors to the decline in attendance.

Re: Fighting in High School Hockey?

Well Mike C. in the junior levels which are players in the same age range as high school, fighting is semi-tollerated, players know the right time for a fight and when the time is not.  The injuries in fights are slim to none in the NHL and players understand the code of fighting, and if that could be implemented into the highschool leauges our games could just be that much more exciting and also controlled.  Refs know how to break up fights and terminate the situation if it escalates too much.  Also if fighting were to be eased up on there might even be less fighting, I mean this by if players knew they could go toe to toe with another most kids wouldn't fight because they are to afraid to.  Only a few players on each team have the guys that are willing to legitly fight and with this alot of the trash talking and after game confrontations could be eliminated because the players know when they are on the ice they can handle their business if its completely necessary.  Another problem that could be solved with fighting is cheap shots such as butt ends, hits from behind, and punching a player when he's not looking.  I have experienced all these cheap shots and if fighting were to be tollerated i can assure you those players commiting dirty shots wouldn't have done it if they knew we could square up on the ice 1v1.  Thats how those problems should be dealt with and you would see a decline in cheap shots.  Fighting also goes beyond throwing punches.  Respect is built amoung players because they know who will fight if something on the ice goes wrong and they can determine the outcome before it occurs.  For example if Laraque were to lay out Danny Briere he would know to look for Cote coming in his direction and even though those to players line up to fight they both have respect for each others courage to stand up and there willingness to fight.  Respect goes a long way and players in high school would be able to learn a respect for other players and this could change the gameplay in our leauge for the better.  Im not saying there should be a fight for every hit thrown, but head hunting would be lowered because if a player were to throw a dirty hit he then knows hes going to have to deal with someone willing to throw down.  Fighting shouldnt happen every game because its not needed a hundred percent of the time but when the time is right nothing is better.

Re: Fighting in High School Hockey?

and thanks guest77 for the support we need more people to look from our perspective and not that of being worried of getting hurt.  Hockey is a rough sport and the players should be ready for that aspect of it, you need to have that grittiness and heart to play this sport.

Re: Fighting in High School Hockey?

I cannot believe this you think fighting should be allowed in High School Hockey because it will draws more people, Do you have a clue what happens in the stands during fights at high school hockey. Do you think these players are train under the same condition as Juniors, Do you think the  Machore  level is the same as Juniors, Also How about the NJISAA sanction high school teams do you think they have fighting absolutely not, These kids get suspended from the team by the school if they fight
When the fighting majors in High School were only a one game misconduct we were still getting the dirty cheap shots so fighting is not going to stop the cheap shots, When this league had the problem with fighting back in 1993 to 1995 it resulted in more bench brawls then you can imagine, Not only were the players fighting but the fans as well.  The League received numerous of complaints from the 2 Police departments and  also complaints from the Private schools who were somewhat supporting (money)  there team, The League had to Step in and do something about this, We implied a 3 game suspension which worked for 2 years. On the third year the fighting started to pick up again. The problems started irrupting again this time parents got involved and wanted the league to do something, The League  again was getting a black eye the Fighting in stands carrying over from the fight on the ice started to get worst.  The threat coming from the police to the ice rink to lock down High School Hockey league until it was under control, Again this is all resulting in fighting on the ice. We then had to do something about it, We needed to put a rule that had some teeth in it. So  the five games were passed by all club members in the league in 2004. This rule was put in place not becasue we were worried about players getting hurt that had nothing to do with are decision it was due to all the nonsence of uncontrol players and parents.  From this day on it has not come up once in changing the rule, We consider appeals if there is a video or if a league rep witness the fighting,
I have been involved in high school hockey before this league was created, I can tell you it is a lot better control now then it was in the pass I have seen it all. I have also coach 2 years at Juniors back in 1995-96, Juniors are a different bread I agree with you on that note fighting works at the higher Junior level because it is respected, another reason the players are much more talented. The high school  players are different levels of talent and different levels of ma chorty. Don't forget this league also consist of Junior Varsity teams these teams were the biggest blunt of fighting in the pass, The JV B level got so bad that we suspend Playoffs for two years at this level, We had bench brawls two years in a row in the finals at JVB  Mike can back me on that. that's why we suspended playoff from that level until I felt that division was in control again. Which today thanks to the five games fighting we have not had any problems in 4 years,  In Fact The last full out bench brawl was 5 years ago Nuemann vs Paul VI
Bottom Line this league is a lot cleaner then it use to be and we get more Compliments then complaints because of it.
Also I do not know where you people are getting that the numbers of attendance is lower this year  it is not it is actually higher, Cherry Hill East,  Washington, Clearview ,Shawnee, Cherokee, are our big drawls our medium drawls consist of 8 teams, Low drawls consist of  3 teams. The money we are collecting this year is actually higher then Last year,
