Bob Savastano’s second goal of the game with ninety-four seconds remaining allowed Clearview to salvage a 5-5 tie against the Eastern Vikings in a game played before a sparse crowd on Friday night. Clearview built a 4-0 lead against the Vikings as they scored a pair of goals seconds apart on two occasions. First Tim Sullivan, on a good keep at the point, threw the puck on net and it found its way through a maze of players into the net and a 1-0 on the power play. Seconds later Savastano made it 2-0 scoring right after the face-off.

Eddie Sarin had two goals and two assists and Mike Nigro added two goals and one assist to lead the Washington Township Minutemen to a 7-0 win over the Braves from Williamstown. Mike Stoever stopped all 20 shots for Township as they remain unbeaten and have a commanding seven point lead in the South Division. Nigro scored his first goal just nine seconds into the game and Township led 1-0. But that would be the only goal of the first period as Williamstown goalie would stop 14 shots, while his offense could only generate 2 shots on net.

As we approach the halfway point of the season, there were a few thoughts I had about some subjects. First with the 30th anniversary of the Flyers Cup upon us does any South Jersey team really care about the Flyers Cup? I remember a time back when if you got selected for the Flyers Cup it was an honor, anymore it seems to be a nuisance. Last year I spoke to several teams and some coaches and the desire didn’t seem to be as strong. One thing that does bother me is that if any South Jersey Team won the Flyers Tournament, since we were not a Pennsylvania school, we could not be declared the champion. So what’s the point?? Why not have a South Jersey Cup? Just as a thought, take the top 4 teams from the SJHSIHL and invite the likes of St. Augustine, Bishop Eustace and a few others.

It was a game that Rowan needed to win not only to end their losing streak but also for the team’s confidence. After losing another tough loss last week at home against St. Josephs, the Profs were looking to execute well both on defense and then offense to come away with the win. In Saturday’s game against Rider, Rowan’s goalie Brian Pacek stopped 28 of 30 shots helping the Profs’ offense to put 37 shots on goal. When the final seconds of the game was over, Rowan would come away with a 9-2 victory which they did not allow a goal during the final two periods. Colin Davis scored four goals while Fred Brewer scored two goals and had three assists.

Louie DeAngelo had three goals and six other players lit the lamp as Washington Township had no problem in defeating Cherry Hill East 9-0 in a game played at Hollydell. Jonathan Paulo added a goal and four assists for Township. Heading into the season Coach Macchione had a roster of only 6 seniors out of 22 players and was counting on contributions from all his lines. After eight games Township has seven players in the top eighteen, led by senior Matt Fleekop who has already surpassed last years’ point total and leads his team with eleven goals. Tonight Fleekop got his team going early as he scored a power play goal with Eddie Sarin getting the assist.
