The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Cherokee JVA withstood a four goal third period by Washington Township and hung on for the 5-4 win in JVA playoff action at the Flyers Skate Zone. After a scoreless first period the Chiefs put up three goals in the second period with Josh Aubrey opening the scoring on the power play at the nine minute mark. Seconds later Jake Kelley made it 2-0 with Brendan Mohnacs getting the assist. Jeff Brna scored a late goal for the Chiefs and they took a 3-0 lead into the third period.

With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:

Alec Miller stopped all 19 shots as Washington Township defeated Black Horse 4-0 in JVA Playoff action. Nick Shute scored the only goal Township would need just forty one seconds into the game. Anthony Lonasco scored a power play goal late in the period and after one it was 2-0. Ryan Andrews would score an early power play goal for the Minutemen as they capitalized on a penalty by Black Horse at the end of the first. Black Horse had two power play opportunities late in the period but Miller kept them off the board.

Cherokee trailed 3-2 after two periods at the Igloo against Washington Township, but rallied with three goals in the third to escape with a 5-3 win and end the season for the Minutemen. Jeremy Ambrose led the offense with a hat trick, with two goals coming in the deciding third period. Cherokee led 2-1 after one on goals by Ambrose and Sam Libetti after Harrison Rauh had scored for Township.

Maxim Kuznetsov had a hat trick and Connor Riley added two goals as Eastern opened the playoffs with an 8-1 win over Washington Township in action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Riley scored both goals in the first period as the Vikings led 2-0. Jarrett Wharton would get a power play goal for Township early in the second period to cut the lead to 2-1. Kuznetsov would score an unassisted goal thirty seconds later and the lead was 3-1. Jacob Findley scored at the nine minute mark to give Eastern a 4-1 lead after two periods.

Nick Shute scored two goals as Washington Township defeated Kingsway 6-1 in the final regular season game and a rare home game for the Minutemen. The six goals is the second highest offensive output for Township and they are 3-0-1 in their last four games and peaking at the right time with playoffs starting. Shute made it 1-0 at the eight minute mark, putting home a rebound. Joe Crincoli made it 2-0 late in the period with Stefano Sferra and Andrew McGinley assisting. Kyle Rink got the start in nets for Township and stopped 12 of thirteen shots. Early in the second period Joey Ricchezza would set-up Shute for his second goal and the lead was 3-0.

Mike Moss broke a 2-2 game with ten minutes left in the game as Team Simmonds edged Team Giroux 3-2 in last night’s Junior/Senior Showcase game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having participated in the last few drafts Coach McKay has never won in this format, and while he wouldn’t admit that it bothered him, I got to believe that the success he has enjoyed over the last 8 years, not winning this game was probably bothering him to a degree. Trailing 2-0 on goals by Kevin Troy of St Joe’s and Zachary Faust of Black Horse, Team Simmonds would get a late goal in the period as Cody Charyk from Shawnee would score with Moss and Vinny Salerno getting the assists.

Jarrett Wharton had three goals and two assists as Washington Township defeated Lower Cape May 9-2 at the Skate Zone. The nine goals was a season high for Township as they launched 52 shots. Township led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Donovan Haslet and Joe Crincoli. Crincoli’s second goal of the game midway through the second period had the lead to 3-0. Wharton would get his first of the night with just under four minutes remaining and Township took a 4-0 lead into the third period.

This past Thursday night the SJHSHL held its Junior/Senior Showcase draft with Team Giroux selected by Coach Popiolek from Black Horse and Coach Busler from Cherry Hill East and making the selections for Team Simmonds were Coach McKay from Cherokee and Coach Vulpio from Clearview. We tossed a coin to see who would get first pick and Team Simmonds won the toss and selected Nick Ramos, Team Giroux would select Zachary Faust with their first pick. The forwards were chosen first, total of 12, followed by 6 defenseman each team, then 3 alternates each team and finally the goalies. Here are the rosters:
