As we complete our 14th season covering the SJHSIHL we are pleased to announce our annual award recipients. This year there seems to be more balance throughout the league and with the playoffs upon us we could be in for a few surprises. Listed below are the 2011-2012 winners:
The SJHSIHL traveled to West Chester last night and played a group of All Stars from the CPIHL and won 8-6. Seven different players scored, with Cole Zucker leading the attack with two goals. The game started out with both teams feeling each other out and with a 20 minute period, the shifts were short and the action did not pick up until late in the period when Jared Hand put the South Jersey team on top with just over two minutes left. That goal seem to open the flood gates as about one minute later Zucker converted a nice feed from Taylor Olson for a 2-0 advantage. Vada Mangum got the start and surrendered just one goal in the final thirty seconds as Kenny Gross scored his first of two on the night to cut the lead to 2-1.
Jared Hand scored two goals and Eric Simone added a goal and two assists as top seed EEW struggled but defeated Lenape/RV 3-0 in Tier II action played late on Friday night at Voorhees. After a scoreless two periods that saw Lenape/RV goalie Cliff Allison make several big saves to keep his team in the game. EEW finally broke through as Simone scored early in the third period lifting a back-hander under the crossbar to give the EEW a 1-0 lead.
The SJHSIHL has released the roster for the Junior-Senior Showcase game to be played on Friday, March 2nd at the Holleydell Ice Arena. Remember each club must have a minimum of one player selected with 18 skaters and 3 goalies chosen, and here are the players selected...
The annual Junior/Senior Showcase game will be played on Friday night March 2nd at 8:30 at Hollydell. The game will feature the top juniors and seniors from the league as recognized by their coaches. The teams will be a combination of players from both Tier 1 and Tier II. The North squad will feature players from Cherokee 1 and Cherokee II, Washington Township, Williamstown, Holy Cross, Black Horse, Lenape/RV and Delran.
In sports the one of the many sayings is it’s not how you start but how you finish. Look at the Giants, they got hot at the right time and unfortunately are celebrating another championship. Same can be said for the St Louis Cardinals last year. As we look back in the SJHSIHL, we used the last 6 games as a barometer to see who has been hot. Cherokee comes in as the favorite, rightfully so as they are the defending champs and finished atop of the Tier 1 division with just 2 losses. And in their last 6 games have gone 5-1. Clearview has won 4 games in a row and 5 out of 6, with the lone loss coming against Cherokee, a team they defeated earlier in the season.
Shane Lippincott stopped 30 shots and a three goal third period helped the EEW defeated Black Horse 4-1 and clinched the top spot in Tier II as they improved to 15-3-1. Balanced scoring was a key as four different players scored. Chris Miller scored the lone goal of the first period as Nicky Bascou threaded a pass to Miller and his seventh goal of the year gave the EEW a 1-0 lead. Lippincott’s best save came late in the period as he robbed Tyler Graham from in close.
The SJHSIHL has put together an All-Star team consisting of juniors and seniors to participate in an All Star Tourney that will compete against teams from other Pennsylvania high school leagues. Each All Star team will play 2 games and showcase their skills in front of local college coaches as well as a selection committee that will ultimately select 20 skaters and 2-3 goalies to represent Team Philadelphia in America’s Showcase, a tournament that features players from all around the country competing against each other.
The EEW got strong goaltending from Shane Lippincott and two goals from Eric Simone as they defeated Washington Township 4-1 in SJHSIHL action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having combined the schools of Eastern, Cherry Hill East and Cherry Hill West to form The EEW, this is a very talented team with strong goaltending and 3 good coaches behind the bench. And although this might have been game #17 for Township on the calendar, I can guarantee you that the EEW had this circled from day one.
