Matt Fields scored twice as Cinnaminson defeated Strath Haven 8-4 in the first round of Flyers Cup action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With a roster full of under-classmen, and with just one senior, these young Pirates continue their strong season and will now meet the 2nd seed West Chester Henderson on Wednesday at Iceline. After the teams traded goals in the opening period, Sean O’Brien for Strath Haven and Ryan Pottieger for the Pirates, Cinnaminson took control in the second period scoring four goals. Freshman Sean Gault put Cinnaminson ahead 2-1 early in the period and minutes later Nick Pidge found Derrick Yoder in the slot and his shot found the net and the lead was 3-1.
Darrel Hunter brought Strath Haven to within 3-2 at the ten minute mark, but goals by Fields and a short-handed breakaway by Eric McDowell in the last fourteen seconds gave the Pirates a 5-2 lead heading into the third period. That lead grew to 7-2 as Garrett McLaverty and Kevin Rafferty scored for the Pirates to ice the game. Strath Haven scored two late goals to cut the lead to 7-4 in the final minute, but Fields iced the game with an empty net goal.
