The Moorestown Quakers got two goals each from Alec Nicolai and Mike Eni as they defeated Cherokee 7-6 in the Championship game last night at Pennsauken. In control most of the way Moorestown had two four goal leads, and did an outstanding job defensively on All-Star forward Frank Garvey, limiting to one goal late in the game. The win gave Moorestown its first ever Championship in the SJHSIHL. From the first period Moorestown was in control, scoring four goals. Nicolai gave Moorestown a 1-0 lead putting home a rebound of a shot by Alex Hashmi.

Alec Nicolai scored twice and Ryan Volosin scored once as Moorestown JVA edged Cherokee JVA 3-2 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday night. All the goals were special teams’ goals, with four power play goals and one short-handed goal. Cherokee scored the lone goal of the first period as Brandon Nilson, who scored both of the goals, took advantage of the extra attacker with Anthony Williams and Josh Westrom getting the assists. Moorestown did all their scoring in the second period.

Using a shut down style defense and three goals by Jake Ahle, Cherokee advanced to the Championship round with a convincing 6-1 victory over Shawnee. Coach Sullivan after the game said, “We moved Pat Casey back to defense, he’s played there at times during the year, and we had a body on McDonald at all times”. That strategy along with the play of goalie Kevin Ferguson in the third period, were the keys to winning and now Cherokee must beat Moorestown twice in order to be the champs.

Fast starts are is usually what defines a Cherokee big game, but tonight Moorestown scored twice in the opening two minutes and never looked back as they defeated Cherokee 8-3 in the last game in the winners bracket. Moorestown is now in the driver’s seat and will have to wait until next Monday before they play another game. Shawnee will play Washington Township on Wednesday night at 8:30 at Voorhees, and the winner of that game will play Cherokee on Friday, at a rink to be announced. Whomever wins Friday will have to beat Moorestown twice in order to become the champion, a tough task just to win one, but two??

Josh Westrom scored with thirty five seconds remaining in the third period to give Cherokee JVA a 4-3 victory over Washington Township JVA. With the victory Cherokee moves into the finals against Moorestown for the championship on March 1st at Voorhees Skate Zone at 7:00. Township scored the only two goals of the first period with Nick Bramante scoring both, one short-handed three minutes into the game and the other goal with the period winding down as Cherokee only managed 3 shots in the opening stanza.
