You could not have scripted this opener any better for new Washington Township coach Mike Glick, right out of the gate you play the defending champ Moorestown with a chance to see how you stack up. The answer was pretty good as they took over control of the game midway through the second period and out-scored Moorestown 9-6 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Another good sign for Township was that senior forward and league MVP Eddie Sarin did not have to carry the scoring load. Sure he had his normal three point night, with a goal and two assists, but three players stepped up and made an immediate contribution.
Eric Naccarelli, Jonathan Smith and freshman Austin Haslett led the Township attack with two goals each. Alec Nicolai led Moorestown with two goals. The first period was back and forth with Moorestown taking a 1-0 lead one minute into the game with Nicolai maneuvering down the right side and beating Pat Finnegan, the sophomore getting the nod over Brandon Cusumano. Sarin tied the score one minute later with Frank Hughes and Steve Sailor getting the assists. Eric Schwartz and Chris Carnivale gave Moorestown a 3-1 lead, but Haslet got his first goal right before the buzzer to cut the lead to 3-2
Another newcomer Ben Basalma tied the score at 3-3 midway through the period scoring an unassisted goal. Township was able to rotate three lines successfully and get contributions from all of them. This depth, if it can continue will carry them a long way. After Nicolai gave Moorestown there last lead at 4-3 at the nine minute mark, Naccarelli scored two goals four minutes apart to put Township ahead 5-4 heading into the final period. Moorestown tied the game on the power play as Brian Glowdowski scored his first varsity goal. Smith gave Township the lead for good as he tallied twice in a span of twenty-four seconds and the lead was 7-5. Goals by Haslet and Justin Cogbill around one by Matt Olbrich for Moorestown closed out the scoring.
