Playing at home against a team still in search of its first win Washington Township started slowly but finished strongly in a 12-2 defeat of the Eastern Vikings in action played at Hollydell on Friday night. Freshman Ryan McCusker got the start in nets for Township and faced just one shot in the first period. Township managed just one goal, scored by Steven Sailor, a deflection off an Eastern player. Eastern tied the game at 1-1 in the first five minutes of the second period as Marc Duyan got the equalizer.
Township came right back less than one minute later as Mike Laurence was set-up in the slot on a nice feed from Eddie Sarin and Township regained the lead at 2-1. Eastern would tie the game at 2-2 as Nick Stengel on a pass from Duyan found the net and with six minutes left in the second period we were tied at 2-2. Unfortunately for the Vikings we still had almost half the game to play and they did not score anymore goals, while Township ran off ten unanswered.
Over the next ninety seconds Township would score three goals and not look back. Doug Sanders broke the tie scoring his second of the season, and then goals by Justin Cogbill and Sarin, twelve seconds apart put Township up 5-2 heading into the third period. Township launched 15 shots in the third period, scoring on seven of them with Ben Basalma and Austin Haslet each scoring two, Eric Naccarelli, Jason Smith and Sarin each getting one.
Notes: Next up for Township is the final meeting of the season with Moorestown on Monday night at the Igloo. Not sure why the schedule makers would not have these two playing later in the season than now is beyond my comprehension.
