Michael Wilson scored five goals as the Wings of Steel defeated the Vineland Sled Stars 7-1 and advanced to the championship game against the Woodbridge Rangers. The Districts took place at the Iceline Arena in West Chester and despite the early start time of 8:30 AM, the Wings were determined to jump out early, especially in light of the classless act committed by the Vineland coach prior to the game. More on that later.

The Wings came into the game with an 18 game winning streak, after having dropped their opening 2 games, both to Woodbridge; they have righted the ship and are on a clear course for their second straight Title. Wilson who led the team in scoring once again but is usually asked to contain his offense as the Wings staff has always stressed that All the players are here to have fun first, winning, while important, is not the only thing, class and dignity are also taught. With the team losing 4 key members this year, the goal was to go out with another championship.

The Wings jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, with Wilson scoring, when asked. Also getting his first playoff goal, Mike Mauger, AKA, Budda Man closed out the scoring late in the third period. Just a mention on an issue that occurred prior to the game. Athen Blaine had tried out for the Junior team, did not make the team, never played with the team, but his name was left on the roster. With this being the last Districts for Athen, and knowing that he never made the team, the Vineland coach felt since his name was still on the roster, he was not eligible to play, although having played Vineland 4 times during the season, not once was this mentioned.

It’s pretty pathetic to think that a coach would want to ruin a young man’s last weekend spent with his team. Fortunately this was corrected after the game and Athen will compete in the championship game on Sunday.
