With another season come and gone, thought I’d reflect back on some issues we discussed at the end of last season and the beginning of this year. At the end of last season Cherokee was thinking of replacing head coach Mike Sullivan, but at the last minute decided not to make a change. And not only was it the right move, Cherokee went on to win the league championship and made the semi-finals of the Flyers Cup. As Mike would tell you, he’s got a good staff with Scott McKay and Steve Monaghan, and the kids bought into the system. There can’t be any grumblings from the board on this season, good job coaches!!

Justin Nugent scored twice to help Cinnaminson build a 3-0 lead and then withstood a rally by Lenape to win 4-2 and thus end the season for Lenape. Playing without starting goalie Jackson Burns, who was serving his last game of a 5 game suspension, defenseman Matt Cloud got his second straight playoff start and played tremendous as he faced 38 shots. Cinnaminson took a 1-0 lead at the six minute mark of the first period as defenseman Troy Pawlikowski, who played a strong physical game, made a good play at the point to keep the puck in the zone and slid it to Sean Joyce along the boards and he found Eric Kissinger who’s shot through a screen beat Cloud for a 1-0 lead. Late in the period Nugent scored a short-handed goal to make it 2-0 after one.

Although we spoke about this throughout the league, we somehow missed posting on our site that Kyle Young set a Lenape team record by scoring six goals in one game as he led his team to a 7-5 win over Shawnee back on January 7th. With his team trailing 4-3 going into the third period, Young netted a hat trick to rally Lenape as he scored two goals in the opening two minutes of the period to give Lenape the lead for good at 5-4. Later in the period he iced the game scoring on the power play with just over three minutes remaining in the contest.

With the second season upon us the SJHSIHL begins it’s double elimination tournament on Monday so we thought we would break down to see exactly who is peaking and who is struggling. Let’s begin with the Eastern Vikings. Tough year for Mike Pontonio to come out of retirement having coached teams in the past to multiple championships, the Vikings did not win a game this season, but in speaking to Coach Pontonio it was not for lack of effort. Don’t see Eastern advancing.

Clearview scored four goals in the second period and went on to defeat Lenape 6-3 at Hollydell ice arena on Friday night. Ed Moore led Clearview with two goals. The win snapped a three game losing streak for Clearview. This was by far the best performance for Clearview as they played a full 45 minutes and helped out defensively in limiting Lenape to not many second chance rebounds.

Eastern had some positives to build on despite a 9-6 loss to Lenape at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Jordan Kreifels and Zach Spear led the balanced Lenape attack with two goals each. For Eastern, offensively they moved the puck better and definitely controlled play for much of the first period. Matt Herbert, who led the Vikings with a hat trick, is a strong offensive threat. Freshman goalie Callan Pyfer, despite surrendering six of the goals, could have used some help from his defense.
