Doug Sanders scored twice as Washington Township won the JVB Championship over Lenape/RV 5-4 at Hollydell on Friday night. The win capped a season that saw the Minutemen go 14-0-2 during the regular season. Township seemed in control of the game as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period, but give Lenape/RV credit as they chipped away at the lead.
Matteo Jordan opened the scoring just ninety seconds into the game as he converted a pass from Sanders. A few minutes later, Brad Boyson, making a return to the lineup after missing several weeks with an injury, converted a pass from Jordan and the lead was 2-0. Sanders added a breakaway goal late in the period and Township led 3-0 after one. Early in the second period Chris Popp got Lenape/RV on the board scoring on the power play to cut the lead to 3-1. Lenape/RV had some more chances, especially on breakaways, but Zach Burkhardt made key saves to keep Township ahead. In the final seconds of the second period Lenape/RV cashed in again on the power play as Ron Randall scored and the game was now 3-2.
Burkhardt made a big save on Sam Belanger early in the third period as he stoned him on a breakaway to keep it 3-2 Township. Sanders would score a short-handed goal to give Township some breathing room at 4-2. But Popp’s second goal of the night brought Lenape/RV to within 4-3 with just fewer than ten minutes left. Tyler Lubrant restored the two goal lead with just over three minutes left but Belanger connected on the power play with two minutes left to cut the lead to 5-4. Township did an excellent job keeping the puck in the Lenape/RV zone for almost the final two minutes and despite pulling the goalie, Lenape/RV could not get the equalizer.
Notes: Congratulations to Coach Choy and Coach Hughes on an almost perfect season.
