Washington Township played solid defense and Ryan McCusker stopped 21 of 22 shots as they defeated Cherokee 4-1 in the featured match-up at the Skate Zone on Friday night. With the victory Township moved into a 3 way tie for first with Moorestown and Cherokee. All 3 teams are 8-2.

Township seemed to want the game more, as all the lines were back-checking and the defense was not allowing any second chance opportunities. Playing a team like Cherokee, that capitalizes on odd man rushes and defensive mistakes, Township committed very few and when they did McCusker was there to shut the door.

Nick Urban scored the only goal of the first period on their first shot of the game with Austin Haslett and Ryan Wilson getting the helpers. Cherokee would not record its first shot on goal until they went on the power play with just un six minutes left, they recorded five on the man advantage, and McCusker turned them all away. The lead grew to 2-0 at the five minute mark of the second period with Doug Sanders putting home a rebound after a 2-on-1 break.

Township scored a short-handed goal in the final two minutes of the period as Shane Moffatt notched his second of the season and the lead was 3-0 entering the third period. John Martino picked up a loose puck in front of McCusker with nine minutes left to give Cherokee some life as he scored his sixth of the season to cut the lead to 3-1. Township continued to minimize the scoring chances and despite having a four minute power play, Cherokee could get no closer. Jason Smith iced the game with four minutes left to close out the scoring.
