Mainland scored a power play goal and one short-handed and Mike Leroy was solid in goal as they defeated St Joe’s 3-2 in an opening round game in the Tier III Playoffs last night at Voorhees. St Joe’s had a golden opportunity early in the game, with a 2 man advantage for one minute, but failed to capitalize, it would be a sign of things to come. Midway through the period Mainland took advantage of their first opportunity with the man advantage as Carmine Morelli converted with assists going to Jared Anapolle and Paddy McFadden.

One minute later St Joe’s got the tying goal with Nick Frangos putting home the rebound, Anthony Lovell and Paulie Petrongolo credited with the assists. Mainland would convert its second chance on the power play as Jack Handshaw scored late in the period to give Mainland a 2-1 lead after one period. After a scoreless second period, St Joe’s had another two man advantage, this time for a full two minutes, but failed to get the tying goal. Mainland’s Josh Handshaw gave his team a two goal lead scoring at the eight minute mark and the lead was 3-1.

Frangos got his second goal of the night, scoring short-handed with less than two minutes remaining in the game, but St Joe’s could get no closer as Leroy made several big save down low to preserve the win. St Joe’s went 0-8 on the power play and will need better success if they want to advance in this double elimination format.
