I watched a coach have his team gather around a television that had been rolled into the gym. I was thinking, they're about to watch some game film, boy was I wrong! This coach pulls out the "Insanity" DVD. The issue, as I see is it is this, the head coach will let their team know how important any aspect of their program is by how much attention they give to it. Case in point, when a coach is going over an offense or defense, do you honestly believe they would pop in a DVD to show the team? I don't believe so, that coach would be teaching, interacting with their team. They would be encouraging cajoling doing things that coaches do.

Matt Cloud had three goals and Brian Miller added two as Team Briere defeated team Giroux 11-2 last night at Hollydell. The game was close after two periods but Team Briere blew the game open with six goals in the third period. Brandon Mead scored twice for Team Giroux. This year the league supplied jerseys and socks to each player. And Joe Walters supplied both teams with hoodies as well.

Two seniors from each Tier I team was selected by their coaches to be represented in letting the fans vote for their Leadership recipient. The voting will end on Tuesday, February 26th at midnight. In a crazy third period where five goals were scored in the last five minutes Mainland held on to defeat St Joe’s 6-5 in a Tier III battle to open up the action at the Skate Zone. With the loss St Joe’s was eliminated from the playoffs. Mainland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Sean Bowman and one on the power play by Josh Handshaw. St Joe’s would rally late in the period as Nick Frangos found Paulie Petrongolo in the slot with just over one minute left in the period. And with just 12 seconds left Tristen Ridarelli tied the score at 2-2.

Nick Frangos had a goal and two assists and Troy Altbaum stopped 24 shots as St Joe’s defeated Middle Township 3-2 to stay alive in the double elimination playoff format. Middle Township had its season end, but not without a great effort, with just 7 skaters, they were in the game until the very end. Altbaum made a game saving stop on Dom Donoflio with just seconds left in regulation.

St Joe’s staved off elimination from the double elimination tournament beating Lower Cape May 9-0 at Hollydell on Friday night. Troy Altbaum stopped all 24 shots in pitching the shutout. Paulie Petrongolo added two goals and two assists. St Joe’s wasted little time in taking control as Nick Frangos scored an unassisted goal as he intercepted a cross ice pass to make it 1-0. Lower Cape May’s best chance of the period came on a breakaway by Karlson Hughes, but Altbaum stoned him. Lovell made it 2-0 on a feed from Nick Corwonski.

Mainland scored a power play goal and one short-handed and Mike Leroy was solid in goal as they defeated St Joe’s 3-2 in an opening round game in the Tier III Playoffs last night at Voorhees. St Joe’s had a golden opportunity early in the game, with a 2 man advantage for one minute, but failed to capitalize, it would be a sign of things to come. Midway through the period Mainland took advantage of their first opportunity with the man advantage as Carmine Morelli converted with assists going to Jared Anapolle and Paddy McFadden.

The teams have been selected for the 2012-2013 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. This year the two teams are being called Team Giroux and Team Briere. There are 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies selected. In case some players can not make the game there also were 3 alternates chosen. All the nominees were submitted by the teams and then chosen by a committee. The page listing the players is still being worked on, but if you are a registered member, you will have full access to view the selections. From the Home page, select the "All Star Game" link on the left.

Eric Lauk had three goals and two assists as Clearview jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and held off a charging St Joe’s team 6-4 in cross-over action played at Hollydell on Friday night. Anthony Lovell had a hat trick for St Joe’s. Clearview started in the opening minute of the game as Mike Cullen scored a power play goal with Lauk getting the assist. The lead grew to 2-0 at the eight minute mark as Ryan Lauk broke in with his brother Eric, 2-on-1 and after Ryan hit the post, Eric was there to put home the rebound and a 2-0 lead. Less than three minutes later Eric made it 3-0, this time with Cullen getting the helper.

Josh Handshaw scored with two minutes left in the game to snap a 5-5 game and give Mainland a 6-5 win over St Joe’s in a Tier III game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Leading 4-1 after the first period on goals from Matt Schenkov, Sean Bowman, Tim Vant and Jack Handshaw, Mainland would see that lead evaporate in the second period. St Joe’s would capitalize on two power play opportunities, first in the opening minute of the second period Paulie Petrongolo would cut the deficit to 4-2. Petrongolo would make it 4-3 scoring a short-handed goal and Nick Frangos would notch his second of the night on the power play late in the period.

Nick Frangos and Anthony Lovell scored two goals each and a strong third period helped St. Joe’s defeat Middle Township 6-1 in Tier III action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Paulie Petrongolo would score one and assist on four goals. Frangos scored the only goal of the opening period, scoring in the final minute. Lovell would score his two goals in a 27 second span early in the second period to give St. Joe’s a 3-0 lead. Middle Township would score a late goal on the power play, Kenny Weightman getting his fifth of the season in the final eight seconds to cut the lead to 3-1.

St Joe’s and the EEW played to a 3-3 tie on Monday night at the Skate Zone with Sam Amon scoring two goals for the EEW. St Joe’s led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Anthony Lovell and Alec Divenuto sandwiched around a goal by Amon. The EEW would score twice in the second period, first Peter Laviolette would score a power play goal and Amon would add his second with Nick Frangos getting the goal for St Joe’s. Both goalies would shut the door after that as Troy Altbaum for St Joe’s and Brian Mood for the EEW would not allow any more goals.

Former Williamstown goalie Troy Altbaum has found a home playing for St Joe’s of Hammonton as he shut out Lower Cape May 2-0 in action played at Hollydell on Friday night. With Williamstown not fielding a team this year, Altbaum hooked up with the team from Hammonton late in the pre-season and his experience in nets should help St Joe’s this season. Altbaum has started two games and has yet to surrender a goal.

Some changes are in store as we begin the 2012/2013 SJHSIHL season, the most significant one being only 4 teams in Tier 1. Cherokee, Washington Township, Shawnee and Moorestown are the four. Clearview is moving into Tier II along with Cinnaminson, Black Horse, EEW and RV/Lenape/Holy Cross.
