Coming into this season there was much uncertainty with the SJHSHL participating in the annual Flyers Cup as the rules were changing and all teams that were invited had to be sanctioned. With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.

Chris DeRose and John Yedman scored two goals each as Moorestown defeated Cherokee 7-3 to capture the first NJ/DE Flyers Cup. As they have done all season Moorestown ran 3 lines and got contributions from each line to wear down the Chiefs. Coach Ridge said later, ”This took a little sting away from losing the league Championship, but would have been better had Cherokee not been missing some key players, that said, it was a good way to end the season on a positive note and to win the inaugural NJ/DE Flyers Cup is an honor".

Cherokee completed its successful season with a thrilling double overtime win as Damon Branche scored in the final minute to give Cherokee a 1-0 win over the EEW. Neither team could score through 54 minutes of play, with EEW having 5 power play opportunities and failing to capitalize, including one 2 man advantage. But the story tonight was the play of both goaltenders. Anthony Maddox for the Chiefs and Mike Verdicchio for the EEW were both outstanding and both pitched a shutout until Branche scored his goal thanks to a nice drop pass from John Butkus.

With the playoffs winding down and another season coming to an end, here are some predictions on who might win their respective Titles: Tier I teams are already set-Moorestown and Cherokee. During the regular season Cherokee had a 2-1-1 edge, but Moorestown has won the last 2 in including a 5-4 win last Friday. The key will be containing Brian Miller, in the season opener Miller went off for 6 goals. Over the next four meetings he has been held to just one goal total, so he has Moorestown’s attention when he is on the ice. The teams are pretty even overall, offensively Cherokee averages about .50 goals more per game, but defensively Moorestown has a slight edge.
