Eastern Vikings began a tradition a few years ago where the Wednesday before Thanksgiving they invite former players to unite and play a scrimmage game against each other. Organized by former head coach Mike Pontonio and team manager Bill Flower the game has been well attended and this year was no different than in the past with close to 40 former Vikings coming from all over the state put that Viking jersey on, one more time. Some of the players have lost a step or two, although a few of the old timers looked like they could suit up today and play, like Anthony Orner.
With social media being more prevalent now, Bill created a Vikings Facebook page and has been able to connect with many former players. The final score is not what is important, rather the connection these players all share, and being part of a team, that once was a dominant presence in the SJHSHL, having merged with Cherry Hill East and West, Eastern does not have enough players, as of yet, to once again stand alone. For now the tradition will continue, each year with the former Vikings players returning, with hopes of a future Vikings team, returning.
