Moorestown established a league record by scoring nine goals in the second period and abruptly ending Cherokee’s season with a 10-4 win last night at the Skate Zone. Led by Chris DeRose with four goals and John Yedman with two, the Quakes had a second period for the ages. Some cynics will tell you that it’s the kiss of death to have a 2-0 lead, but that’s where the Chiefs stood after the first period on goals by Boomer Miller and Christian Katsanos, but the second period began with Moorestown on the power play and DeRose wasted no time scoring in the opening eighteen seconds to cut the lead to 2-1. DeRose would get his second power play goal just two minutes later and just like that we were tied at 2-2.
Once Yedman scored at the three minute mark, you could feel the momentum shift and the Quakes just kept on coming. Brandon Eberly scored thirty seconds after Yedman and then over one minute later DeRose notched his third of the night and it was 5-2. Miller temporarily stopped the bleeding scoring his second of the night to make it 5-3, but Moorestown would add four goals in the final four minutes of the period to cap its record setting night. DeRose and Jack Santosuosso scored goals twenty eight seconds apart to make it 7-3 and Alex Crowl and Yedman on the power play closed out the nine goal outburst. Pat Hickey would score a short-handed goal for the Chiefs early in the third period and Chris Crowl would put an exclamation point on this win with a power play goal in the final minute.
Notes: The loss eliminated Cherokee and ended its four year run, not many teams will be able to repeat that feat, congratulations to Cherokee on such a feat. Moorestown will now play Township on Friday with the winner going into the championship against Clearview.
