Zachary Burkhardt stopped 20 shots as Washington Township eliminated Moorestown 2-0 in the SJHSIHL Varsity Playoffs. Township will now move on and face Clearview in the Championship round. Township must beat Clearview twice in order to win the title as the View has not suffered a loss in the double elimination tournament. Burkhardt continued his mastery over Moorestown, which was coming off a record setting performance in eliminating Cherokee on Monday night.
During the regular season Burkhardt was 4-0 against Moorestown, only surrendering a total of 4 goals. And those came in the first 2 games. So going back to the regular season and the 2 meetings here in the playoffs, Burkhardt has shut out the Quakes in 4 straight games, quite a feat considering Moorestown has 2 of the top 5 scorers in the league on their roster. Tonight you knew that goals would be at a premium and Township would strike first as their leader Chris Cozzan would convert on a feed from Jared Wharton for a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game. Burkhardt made that lone goal stand up. Moorestown had some point blank opportunities, including one on the power play from John Yedman in the second period and another glove save on a shot by DeRose.
Moorestown would pull their goalie in the final minute, and Riley Griffith would ice the game with an empty net goal for the 2-0 final. The finals will begin on Monday night at 7:40 at the Voorhees Skate Zone.
