While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. This year Tier I will consist of the following teams: Cherokee, Eastern, Moorestown and Washington Township in one conference and Shawnee, Kingsway, Williamstown, Egg Harbor and Lower Cape May in the other. Black Horse has dropped out of the league citing not enough players to fill a team.

Ryan Lasalvia and Patrick Hoffman each scored two goals as HLV defeated Shawnee 7-2 and have gone through the tournament undefeated at 3-0 and will now await the winner from the losers’ bracket. Having just won 6 games all season HLV has caught fire at the right time. Averaging less than three goals during the regular season, HLV is averaging five goals in their three wins and during the regular season they would give up an average of five goals per game but in the playoffs in three games have surrendered a total of just five goals. Matt Saavas got things going for HLV scoring at the seven minute mark to put them up 1-0. Ryley Bergeson would tie the game at 1-1 for Shawnee scoring on the power play just over two minutes later.

Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:

Mike Moss broke a 2-2 game with ten minutes left in the game as Team Simmonds edged Team Giroux 3-2 in last night’s Junior/Senior Showcase game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having participated in the last few drafts Coach McKay has never won in this format, and while he wouldn’t admit that it bothered him, I got to believe that the success he has enjoyed over the last 8 years, not winning this game was probably bothering him to a degree. Trailing 2-0 on goals by Kevin Troy of St Joe’s and Zachary Faust of Black Horse, Team Simmonds would get a late goal in the period as Cody Charyk from Shawnee would score with Moss and Vinny Salerno getting the assists.

This past Thursday night the SJHSHL held its Junior/Senior Showcase draft with Team Giroux selected by Coach Popiolek from Black Horse and Coach Busler from Cherry Hill East and making the selections for Team Simmonds were Coach McKay from Cherokee and Coach Vulpio from Clearview. We tossed a coin to see who would get first pick and Team Simmonds won the toss and selected Nick Ramos, Team Giroux would select Zachary Faust with their first pick. The forwards were chosen first, total of 12, followed by 6 defenseman each team, then 3 alternates each team and finally the goalies. Here are the rosters:

Griffin Conroy stopped all 25 shots and the Quakes scored 4 power play goals as Moorestown defeated Shawnee 4-0 in the late game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. It seemed like every time Shawnee committed a penalty, Moorestown would capitalize. Early in the first period Charlie Banquier would connect on the power play for the Quakes, scoring his third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. That was all Conroy would need as it turned out, but in the second period, one with 11 penalties called, Moorestown would have a golden opportunity once again early in the period, this time a two-man advantage but could not capitalize. But midway through the period Brandon Eberly would score the second power play goal of the game and the lead was 2-0.

Nicholas Ramos has played for Clearview for four years and came into last night’s game needing three points to reach 100 in his career and he got there with an assist on the last Clearview goal with just over one minute remaining as the View handled Shawnee 8-2 in SJHSHL action played at Hollydell. Anthony Dellerose and Robert Penrod scored two goals each and Ramos had three assists. Penrod scored the only goal of the first period with a blast just over the blue line and he scored his second of the night at the almost exact time in the second period for a 2-0 lead. Dellerose would make it 3-0 as Colin Hughes sent him in on a breakaway moments after Penrod’s goal.

Cherry Hill East defeated Shawnee 3-1 in Tier II action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees and moved one point ahead of Shawnee and into second place in the division. East was on their game offensively, launching 30 shots at Shawnee net minder Shay Perry, who was on his game and kept Shawnee in the game. Mike Cottone gave East a 1-0 lead just 3 minutes into the game getting his first goal of the season in just his second Varsity game. Kyle Hill scored a power play goal with just over five minutes left in the period to put East up 2-0. Evan Glenn would send in Ryley Bergeson on a breakaway in the closing minutes to put Shawnee back in the game at 2-1.
