Trailing 4-0 midway through the second period, things did not look good for Eastern, but to their credit they kept firing the puck, 42 shots in all and would chip away at the lead and with less than one minute left in overtime Kristopher Zapata would deposit the game winner past Matt Lynch and the Vikings would escape with a 5-4 win in the opening round of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. Jordan Stein led the Vikings with two goals. Township would build their lead initially taking advantage of the power play, as five minutes into the game Anthony Lonasco working behind the net, found CJ Castorina out front and his quick shot found the net and a 1-0 lead for Township.

Andrew Lavdas stopped all 30 shots as Cherokee opened defense of their title with a 4-0 win over Washington Township. Arguably one of the hotter teams coming into the playoffs Township had won seven out of their last eight and was averaging almost six goals per game, but tonight Lavdas shut them down. Defensively the Chiefs were getting back and clearing any rebounds, but on several point blank shots Lavdas came up big. Darren Ambrose led the offense scoring two goals. The Chiefs broke through late in the first period on a great set up from Sam Libetti and Jeremy Ambrose who fed Jack Ellis in front and he deposited his shot into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Don’t look now but the hard charging Minutemen of Washington Township after defeating Williamstown 5-1 have now won seven games in a row and is the hottest team heading into the playoffs. These two teams met just twelve days ago in a penalty filled game so tonight we had veteran referee Bob Teti, who prior to the game addressed both teams and delivered a strong message, nothing would be tolerated just play hockey, and his partner was Laura White, another experienced and international referee. I would say message received as we had just 5 penalties and all to Township. Giovanni Torrie gave Township a 1-0 lead scoring his fifth goal of the season with just under four minutes left in the opening period. Later in the period Mike Guarracino on a nice breakout pass by Matt Kennedy would make it 2-0 with CJ Castorina getting the other assist.
