Shane McGarvey was just 14 years old when tragically this past July he was killed in a dirt bike accident. This past Sunday night, prior to the Eastern-Cherokee JVA game, the Cherokee Chiefs organization came together to honor this young man, taken way too soon.

Shane was a member of the Flyers youth program and also played on the Chiefs middle school program. This year he would have played under Coach Sabol on the JVA team as a freshman at Cherokee. Coach Zuber from Eastern, one of Shane’s coaches from the youth team, also attended the celebration with Shane’s close friend and teammate Gavin Pringle who spoke during the ceremony and remembered his friend and the times they shared on and off the ice.

This life celebration of Shane’s short life was to commemorate him with his family and promote a scholarship in his name, the Shane McGarvey Memorial Scholarship.

With emcee Jeff Markywitz handling the ceremony, all of Shane’s teammates from the middle school program along with the JVA club were present on the ice. In a very emotional presentation, Shane’s parents, Philip and Dana McGarvey were presented a glass encased Cherokee jersey signed by each of Shane’s teammates.

There are some local events planned in the future that will be donating some proceeds to the scholarship fund. We will share it as we get information on these events.
