Friday, January 28, 2011
In the third annual Junior-Senior Showcase game in the SJHSIHL held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees the North came back from a 3-0 deficit and beat the South 9-5. Vincent Tascione led the North with a goal and four assists and Tyler Pedersen added two goals. Jonathan Ruiz and Jared Hand led the South with two goals each. Tascione was voted the MVP for the game.
The South jumped out to a 3-0 lead five minutes into the game with Ruiz scoring on a backhander just ninety seconds in. Hand made it 2-0 as he scored on the power play with Eric Simone and Ruiz getting the helpers. Seconds later Matt Herbert from Eastern made it 3-0 as he broke down the left side and scored with a quick shot. Tascione would get that one back thirty seconds later as he converted a nice pass from his fellow Shawnee lineman Robert Willwerth to cut the lead to 3-1. Charles Quigley cut the lead to 3-2 as his slap shot with seventeen seconds left in the period cut the lead to 3-2.
The North would get two goals in the first four minutes of the second period, one by Greg Nagy and the game tying goal by Willwerth and we had a brand new game at 4-4. With momentum on their side the North struck again as Pat Mohnacs gave them their first lead at 5-4. Tyler Pedersen closed out the dominant second period for the North scoring late to make it 6-4.
Alec Nicolai scored on a break in the first five minutes of the third period to make it 7-4. Ruiz got that one back a few minutes later to cut the deficit to 7-5. With a chance on the power play midway through the period the South gave up a short-handed goal by Pedersen to ice the game at 8-5. Justin Nugent closed out the scoring with two minutes left as the North took a two games to one lead in the series.
Notes: The game was a bit more chippy than expected but overall the refs did a nice job in preventing any issues.
