Frasier hat trick leads North to win in Showcase Game

Black Horse forward Kyle Frasier had three goals and two assists to lead the North All-Stars to a 12-4 win over the South All-Stars in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played at Voorhees. Mike Katz added two goals and one assist for the North. Katz opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, but the South came back just over one minute later to tie the game at 1-1with Shawnee’s Alex Churchill getting the goal and Sean Burnham from Kingsway the assist. The North would score the next three goals, Frazier scored unassisted on a breakaway for a 2-1 lead, then late in the period goals by Moorestown’s’ John Yedman and St Joe’s Paul Petrongolo ninety second apart gave the North a 4-1 lead heading into the second period.

There were some differences than a regular game, as they played 20 minute periods and coaches were given an option on a penalty, to take the power play or a penalty shot. With just 5 penalties, both teams each time chose the penalty shot. Black Horse’ Dan Wallace made it 5-1 less than one minute into the second period, but the South would get goals from Tyler Tavormina and Burnham to get within 5-3 midway through the second period. The North however would respond with three goals in a three minute span to break the game open. Frasier would then score on a penalty shot, Cherokees’ Tim Ryan scored on a shot in the slot for a 7-3 lead and St Joe’s Dan McCloskey made it 8-3 heading into the third period.

Goals by Katz and Frasier two minutes apart at the twelve minute mark made it 10-3. And late in the period Black Horses’ Bryan Popiolek and Jim Malseed would add goals before the South would get a late goal from Steve Charzyn to close out the scoring.

Notes: Kyle Frasier was awarded the MVP for his efforts. There were some other contributors considered, including late addition to the roster Evan Smith, goalie from Shawnee who turned aside 11 of the 12 shots he faced. Special thanks to Coach Walters of Clearview for once again donating the shirts given to the players after the game. Next year we hope to schedule the game in January, prior to playoffs. Congratulations to Coach Ridge and his staff on the win. Seems like the drafting strategy paid off.
