Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kenny Weightman had a hat trick for Team Giroux; Nick Frangos led Team Vorachek also with a hat trick. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.
Mackenzie Restle gave Team Giroux a 3-2 lead, but moments later Kris Hastings would tie the score at 3-3. James Lowry from Cinnaminson put Team Giroux up 4-3 in the second period and Weightman completed his hat trick moments later for a 5-3 lead. After Dom Salerno from Kingsway cut the lead to 5-4, Rocky Demas from Riverfront would score for Team Giroux and the lead was 6-4. Hastings second goal of the night would bring Team Vorachek to within 6-5 and Frangos would get the equalizer, to complete his hat trick and we were knotted at 6-6.
It appeared overtime was a real possibility, until Haslett’s goal, and Team Vorachek had a chance in the final twenty seconds as Cherokee’s Boomer Miller had a penalty shot, but was beaten by Colin Rogers, a late arrival to the game and the goalie from St Joe’s preserved the win for Team Giroux.
Notes: Overall one of the better played Showcase games in recent years, especially with a few local colleges in attendance. Congratulations to Coach Nogowski and Coach Zuber on their win.
