Articles From The 2012-13 Season
On a day that was perfect to play hockey outdoors, the Wings of Steel traveled to Central Park in New York to take on the NY Rangers. It was a cold brisk day where the players didn't mind playing hockey during the daylight hours at Lasker Rink in the middle of Central Park. Michael Mauger scored the only goal during the first period which proved to be the game winner. The Wings of Steel won this game 2-0 and ended their two game losing streak.

I watched a coach have his team gather around a television that had been rolled into the gym. I was thinking, they're about to watch some game film, boy was I wrong! This coach pulls out the "Insanity" DVD. The issue, as I see is it is this, the head coach will let their team know how important any aspect of their program is by how much attention they give to it. Case in point, when a coach is going over an offense or defense, do you honestly believe they would pop in a DVD to show the team? I don't believe so, that coach would be teaching, interacting with their team. They would be encouraging cajoling doing things that coaches do.
With the season officially over, just wanted to get some random thoughts off my mind and maybe tie up some loose ends…
Brian Miller and Cole Zucker each scored two goals and Aaron Huffnagle added four assists as Cherokee defeated Parkland 6-3 in the AA Finals of the Flyers Cup. Cherokee becomes the first South Jersey team to ever win the AA championship. The Chiefs were totally dominant from the start, out-shooting the over matched Trojans 30-11 and controlling play for the entire game. The Chiefs took the toughest road to the title as they were seeded fifth, knocked off the top seed in the tournament in CB South and had no home games.
Tim Ryan scored three goals as Cherokee won the JVA Championship defeating Washington Township 5-3 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Ryan scored both goals of the opening period, the first one just nine seconds into the game, the second short-handed as Shayne Toran sent him in all alone. Township would trail 3-0 as Tim Connolly scored at the nine minute mark of the second period but just over one minute later Matt Grosmick would cut the deficit to 3-1 scoring an unassisted goal. Then with a chance on the power play late in the period Jimmy Pollock put home a rebound on a shot by Eric Sailor to make it 3-2.
Zach Robins scored five goals as Mainland rallied from a two goal deficit to defeat Black Horse 6-5 in the JVB Title game played at Voorhees. Trailing 3-1, Mainland scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead, before Black Horse rallied back. Scott Veneziale and Nick Finocchiaro scored in the opening nine minutes to give Black Horse a 2-0 lead. Mainland got one back late in the period as Robins scored with Tim Vant getting the first of his three assists. Kevin Oneill scored at the five minute mark of the second period to give Black Horse a 3-1 advantage. Mainland then would score four goals in the next six minutes to capture a 5-3 lead after two. Robins would account for three of them and Frank Christy got the other.
Austin Haslett scored twice, his second coming with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime period as Washington Township JVA defeated Clearview JVA 4-3 and advance to the JVA Championship game. Township will meet Cherokee on Tuesday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. After neither team could score in the first period, Eric Benton put Township up 1-0 early in the second period. Clearview would commit back-to-back penalties to give Township a 2 man advantage and they would capitalize.
Matt Cloud had three goals and Brian Miller added two as Team Briere defeated team Giroux 11-2 last night at Hollydell. The game was close after two periods but Team Briere blew the game open with six goals in the third period. Brandon Mead scored twice for Team Giroux. This year the league supplied jerseys and socks to each player. And Joe Walters supplied both teams with hoodies as well.
Max Ramos stopped 23 shots and goals by Eric Lauk and Matt Bishop were just enough as Clearview defeated H/L/V 2-1 to win the Tier II championship at Hollydell. After a scoreless first period Lauk, recently named Breakout Player of the Year, deflected a cross-ice pass from Norman Angel to give the View a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the second period. Bishop made it 2-0 at the nine minute mark as his shot along the ice, through a maze of players, found the net, John Garbarino getting the assist.
Eric Lauk had two goals and one assists as Clearview avoided elimination and defeated H/L/V 4-2 in Tier 2 playoff action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday night at Hollydell to decide the champion. H/L/V took a 1-0 lead just ninety seconds into the game as Karl Houwen scored his first goal of the playoffs. Clearview tied the score at 1-1 scoring their first of three power play goals as Lauk put home a shot by Matt Bishop. Two minutes later Bishop would score on the power play with Lauk getting the helper and Clearview led 2-1 after one period.
