Ryan McCusker stopped 28 shots and Tyler Benton snapped a 1-1 game with less than three minutes left in the game as Washington Township defeated Cherokee 2-1 at the Skate Zone on Monday night. Tyler Lubrant scored the lone goal of the opening period as Township led 1-0. McCusker shut down the high potent Chiefs offense until the third period when Boomer Miller tied the game on the power play, converting on a 4-on-3.

Six different players scored for the EEW as they defeated Cinnaminson 6-2 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday. Trailing 1-0 on a goal by James Popp, the EEW would score the next five goals. After Peter Laviolette would tie the score at 1-1, scoring his second goal of the season, the EEW would take control of the game scoring three goals in the second period.

Former Williamstown goalie Troy Altbaum has found a home playing for St Joe’s of Hammonton as he shut out Lower Cape May 2-0 in action played at Hollydell on Friday night. With Williamstown not fielding a team this year, Altbaum hooked up with the team from Hammonton late in the pre-season and his experience in nets should help St Joe’s this season. Altbaum has started two games and has yet to surrender a goal.

Playing without Casey Forte and Cole Zucker, Cherokee managed a 6-0 win over Black Horse in a cross-over game played at Hollydell. Boomer Miller scored his first two goals of the season to lead the Cherokee attack. Black Horse played mostly under-classmen and kept the game competitive. With the win the Chiefs improved to 2-0 and will face Washington Township on Monday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. After Miller made it 2-0 midway through the first period Dave Mazzilli scored on a breakaway to put the Chiefs up 3-0 after the first period.

Doug Sanders and Matteo Jordan scored two goals each as Washington Township had little trouble in defeating Cinnaminson 9-1 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With the win Township improved to 3-1 and moved into first place in the Tier 1 division. Ryan McCusker stopped 20 shots and saw his offense launch 54 shots at Cinnaminson goalie Stephen Renshaw. Township would score four goals in both the first and third periods with Jordan opening the scoring on the power play just under five minutes into the game with Sanders getting the lone assist.

Casey Zawojski snapped a 2-2 game early in the third period scoring a power play goal as Black Horse defeated Clearview 4-3 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Zawojski would later be ejected for a boarding major which would give Clearview a five minute power play, and after pulling the goalie, Brandon Mead would score an empty net goal with forty seconds left to give Black Horse a two goal cushion at 4-2. Matt Bishop got Clearview to within 4-3 with thirteen seconds left but time would run out for the Pioneers.

Moorestown used a six goal uprising in the first period and coasted to a 7-1 win over Black Horse in action played at Hollydell. Eric Schwartz had a hat trick and Mike Katz and Brett Woyshner added two goals each for Moorestown. Joe Laserre scored the lone goal for Black Horse scoring midway through the final period.

Seven different players scored for Washington Township on Friday as they defeated EEW 8-1 in cross-over action played at Hollydell. Jason Smith led the way with two goals and one assist, Frank Hughes added a goal and two assists. Zack Burkhardt stopped 20 shots in capturing his first win of the season.

Some changes are in store as we begin the 2012/2013 SJHSIHL season, the most significant one being only 4 teams in Tier 1. Cherokee, Washington Township, Shawnee and Moorestown are the four. Clearview is moving into Tier II along with Cinnaminson, Black Horse, EEW and RV/Lenape/Holy Cross.
