Articles From The 2013-14 Season
Normally competing as rivals in the SJHSHL, these 2 teams have come together to fight MS as they played the 2nd annual Score for a Cure exhibition game at Voorhees this past Sunday, April 6th, with all the proceeds going towards the research to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. This game wasn’t about who won or lost, although Riverfront did win 6-3, but more about people uniting to raise money and awareness for a great cause. This event was born through participation of the Delran hockey team that had been participating in a tournament in Pennsylvania called Wink for Pink, a fundraiser for research and treatment in the fight against breast cancer.

Coming into this season there was much uncertainty with the SJHSHL participating in the annual Flyers Cup as the rules were changing and all teams that were invited had to be sanctioned. With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.
Chris DeRose and John Yedman scored two goals each as Moorestown defeated Cherokee 7-3 to capture the first NJ/DE Flyers Cup. As they have done all season Moorestown ran 3 lines and got contributions from each line to wear down the Chiefs. Coach Ridge said later, ”This took a little sting away from losing the league Championship, but would have been better had Cherokee not been missing some key players, that said, it was a good way to end the season on a positive note and to win the inaugural NJ/DE Flyers Cup is an honor".
Eric Schwartz had three goals to lead Moorestown over Salesianum 5-2 in semi-final action in the NJ/DE Flyers Cup played at the Skate Zone on Monday night in Voorhees. Moorestown will have a rematch with rival Cherokee in the finals and will look to avenge their league championship loss. Moorestown led 2-0 after the opening period as Mike Katz scored at the nine minute mark and two minutes later with Salesianum down a man Schwartz connected on the power play for a 2-0 lead. Early in the second period after Salesianum cut the deficit to 2-1, Moorestown wasted little time in recapturing their two goal lead as Brian Santosuosso deflected a point shot by Tyler Tavormina for a 3-1 advantage.
Johnny Martino score with two minutes left in the game to give Cherokee a 4-3 victory over Black Horse in semi-final action at the Skate Zone. With the win Cherokee will face Moorestown in the first ever NJ/DE Flyers Cup finale slated for Tuesday at 8:30 at Voorhees. Anthony Fenu scored just thirty seconds into the game to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Scott Veneziale would tie the game midway through the period for Black Horse and John Kennedy would score the first of his two goals on the night as Black Horse led 2-1 after one period.
Black Horse forward Kyle Frasier had three goals and two assists to lead the North All-Stars to a 12-4 win over the South All-Stars in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played at Voorhees. Mike Katz added two goals and one assist for the North. Katz opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, but the South came back just over one minute later to tie the game at 1-1with Shawnee’s Alex Churchill getting the goal and Sean Burnham from Kingsway the assist. The North would score the next three goals, Frazier scored unassisted on a breakaway for a 2-1 lead, then late in the period goals by Moorestown’s John Yedman and St Joe’s Paul Petrongolo ninety second apart gave the North a 4-1 lead heading into the second period.
Sean Conard scored two power play goals as Riverfront cruised to a 5-1 win over St Joe’s to win the JVB Championship in action played ta the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Riverfront jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with Zachary Bock scoring a goal in the first three minutes for a 1-0 lead and Jake Sitzler scored his first of the playoffs in the last three minutes of the period. Conard scored the only goal of the second period on the power play with Jake Gimbel getting the assist.
Balanced scoring was a strong point of Moorestown all season and last night was no exception as six different players scored to lead them to a 6-1 win over Clearview in Flyers Cup action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. After scoring a goal just three minutes into the contest, David Shore picked a great time to get his first goal of the season as he made it 2-0 at the four minute mark. Early in the second period Nicholas Karelfors-Murphy deflected a pass from Alex Crowl for a 3-0 lead. Moorestown would make it 4-0 later in the period as Chris DeRose broke in with Mike Katz and DeRose scored and chased starter Mike Hughes in nets for Clearview.
Black Horse defeated Delaware Military Academy 4-3 to advance to the semi-finals against Cherokee in Flyers Cup action played at the Pond. Playing against DMA for the first time, a team that recently won their championship and finished the season at 14-2-1, Black Horse jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Scott Veneziale and Austin Cole. DMA got one back cashing in on a two-man-advantage as Paul Williams scored to make it 2-1. Later in the period Colin Emerich had his point shot find the net to tie the game at 2-2. Black Horse came right back as Bryan Popiolek scored to put Black Horse up 3-2. DMA came back to tie just thirty seconds into the third period as Brian Henry got the tying goal.
Salesianum scored with six minutes remaining in overtime to defeat Washington Township 4-3 and advance to the semi-finals in the first annual New Jersey/DE Flyers Cup at the Pond in Delaware. Township got goals from Justin Kammerer and Colin Valentine to take a 2-0 early into the second period. Salesianum scored a power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1 as JP Sawyer connected at the nine minute mark.
