With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.

Having just completed the first draft for the Junior-Senior Showcase game and having posted the selections as they were happening, wanted to let you see the whole roster. The game will be played on Friday night March 7th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees at 9:30, if the time changes we will post in the forum.
Mason Gagne scored with just over four left in the game to snap a 4-4 game and keep Clearview’s hopes alive with a 5-4 win over Black Horse. The Championship game is scheduled to be at Hollydell this Friday night. Eric Lauk led Clearview with two goals. The View led 2-0 after one period on goals by Lauk and Jeff Todd. Black Horse came back in the second period; first Kyle Frasier scored on the power play three minutes into the period and Rich Brusco, did his Booby Orr impersonation as he went end to end, stick handling through every defender and ripped a shot home with his team short-handed to tie the game at 2-2.

Kyle Frasier and Bryan Popiolek had a goal and two assists and Scott Veneziale had two goals to lead Black Horse by Clearview 4-2 in the Tier II playoff game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Black Horse will now await the winner of the HLV-Clearview game on Friday night at Voorhees. Black Horse needs just one win for the title, while the winner of the Clearview-HLV game will need to beat Black Horse twice. After a scoreless first period, Black Horse broke on top at the nine minute mark as Frasier set-up Popiolek, less than two minutes later Frasier scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0.
With the playoffs winding down and another season coming to an end, here are some predictions on who might win their respective Titles: Tier I teams are already set-Moorestown and Cherokee. During the regular season Cherokee had a 2-1-1 edge, but Moorestown has won the last 2 in including a 5-4 win last Friday. The key will be containing Brian Miller, in the season opener Miller went off for 6 goals. Over the next four meetings he has been held to just one goal total, so he has Moorestown’s attention when he is on the ice. The teams are pretty even overall, offensively Cherokee averages about .50 goals more per game, but defensively Moorestown has a slight edge.
