Alec Nicolai scored twice and Ryan Volosin scored once as Moorestown JVA edged Cherokee JVA 3-2 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday night. All the goals were special teams’ goals, with four power play goals and one short-handed goal. Cherokee scored the lone goal of the first period as Brandon Nilson, who scored both of the goals, took advantage of the extra attacker with Anthony Williams and Josh Westrom getting the assists. Moorestown did all their scoring in the second period.
Using a shut down style defense and three goals by Jake Ahle, Cherokee advanced to the Championship round with a convincing 6-1 victory over Shawnee. Coach Sullivan after the game said, “We moved Pat Casey back to defense, he’s played there at times during the year, and we had a body on McDonald at all times”. That strategy along with the play of goalie Kevin Ferguson in the third period, were the keys to winning and now Cherokee must beat Moorestown twice in order to be the champs.
Fast starts are is usually what defines a Cherokee big game, but tonight Moorestown scored twice in the opening two minutes and never looked back as they defeated Cherokee 8-3 in the last game in the winners bracket. Moorestown is now in the driver’s seat and will have to wait until next Monday before they play another game. Shawnee will play Washington Township on Wednesday night at 8:30 at Voorhees, and the winner of that game will play Cherokee on Friday, at a rink to be announced. Whomever wins Friday will have to beat Moorestown twice in order to become the champion, a tough task just to win one, but two??
Josh Westrom scored with thirty five seconds remaining in the third period to give Cherokee JVA a 4-3 victory over Washington Township JVA. With the victory Cherokee moves into the finals against Moorestown for the championship on March 1st at Voorhees Skate Zone at 7:00. Township scored the only two goals of the first period with Nick Bramante scoring both, one short-handed three minutes into the game and the other goal with the period winding down as Cherokee only managed 3 shots in the opening stanza.
Frank Garvey scored four goals and Kyle Kopervas added two as Cherokee was all over Cinnaminson 9-2 in action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Cherokee will now play Moorestown as they are the two teams left in the winners’ bracket. The winner of that game will advance to the championship round. Cherokee wasted no time in taking control of the game as Garvey scored a power play goal three minutes in. Just about two minutes later, Garvey struck again, right up the middle as he dragged the puck on his stick and wristed a shot into the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Cherokee scored seven straight goals, including three by Jake Ahle as they charged past Rancocas Valley 7-2 last night at Voorhees. After playing a lackluster first period that saw RV take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mike Walsh, Cherokee Coach Mike Sullivan instructed his team to pick up the intensity and start skating, and boy did they take over that second period. After Sean Fleming scored early in the period to put RV ahead 2-0, Cherokee would score four goals over the next six minutes to take control of the game.
Cherokee opened its playoff run with an easy 8-0 win over West Deptford at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Eight different players scored for the Chiefs as they begin their run towards another championship. Jason Spieker and Brian Slusarz got the only goals of the first period and West Deptford managed only one shot. Jake Ahle made it 3-0 early in the second period and goals by Frank Garvey and Pat Casey less than one minute apart broke the game open at 5-0. West Deptford had one really good scoring opportunity late in the game Luke DeHart had a breakaway, but failed to score. Goals by Mike Ligeikis, Anthony Santisi and Eric Prince rounded out the scoring for Cherokee.
Washington Township continued its strong run as four different players scored in a 4-2 win over Cherokee. Mike Stoever stopped 32 of 34 shots, surrendering two power play goals. Township led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Matt Fleekop. That lead grew to 2-0 as Township capitalized on a two-man advantage at the eight minute mark as John Rey slid a pass to Jonathan Paulo who had an empty net to shoot at. It became 3-0 as Louie DeAngelo put home a rebound of a shot by Dante Fleagle with just under four minutes left in the period. Through two periods, Township had played solid defense, stayed out of the penalty box, only one infraction, and Stoever was not giving up any rebounds.
Jake Ahle snapped a 3-3 tie with under five minutes left in the game to spark Cherokee to a 6-3 win over Shawnee. Adam Hidalgo and Eric Storey scored the only goals through the first two periods as we were 1-1 heading into the third period. Pat Mohnacs scored in the first thirty seconds to put Cherokee up 2-1, and one minute later Frank Garvey scored on the power play and Cherokee seemed to be gaining control and now led 3-1. Shawnee was missing their leader and top goal score as Matt McDonald sat out with a concussion, but rallied back to tie.
