Clearview rebounded from a loss in the championship game by having seven different players score goals and Mike Hughes stopped all 14 shots as Clearview defeated Cherokee 7-0 in the first round of the NJ/DE Flyers cup at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Anthony DelleRose opened the scoring two minutes into the game Kyle McGovern added a power play goal four minutes later and the View led 2-0. Trevor Ligeikis scored twice as Cherokee built a 3-0 lead and held on to defeat Washington Township 3-1 and capture the JVA Title. Township failed to capitalize on seven power play opportunities and despite being the top seed and suffering only one loss during the regular season, Cherokee will wear the crown. The Chiefs jumped out early in the first period as Mike Smith scored in the first three minutes. Ligeikis added a power play goal for a 2-0 lead, late in the period and Township had an uphill battle.

Moorestown established a league record by scoring nine goals in the second period and abruptly ending Cherokee’s season with a 10-4 win last night at the Skate Zone. Led by Chris DeRose with four goals and John Yedman with two, the Quakes had a second period for the ages. Some cynics will tell you that it’s the kiss of death to have a 2-0 lead, but that’s where the Chiefs stood after the first period on goals by Boomer Miller and Christian Katsanos, but the second period began with Moorestown on the power play and DeRose wasted no time scoring in the opening eighteen seconds to cut the lead to 2-1. DeRose would get his second power play goal just two minutes later and just like that we were tied at 2-2.

Clearview got two goals from Robert Penrod and played a smothering game defensively as they defeated Cherokee 3-1 in the playoff opener for both teams. Clearly the View’s game plan was evident and that was to concentrate on shutting down the league’s top player in Boomer Miller and clog his passing lane as he looks to create opportunities. Penrod gave the View a 1-0 lead midway through the first period scoring on the power play as he put home a shot by Matt Manzo. Penrod made it 2-0 early in the second period scoring a short-handed goal on great hustle by Anthony Dellerose. Stealing the puck at center ice, Dellerose broke in all alone and after being stopped, he stuck with the play and found Penrod in front who deposited his second goal into the net.

Joseph Urban paced the offense scoring two goals and Kyle Rink stopped 17 shots in notching his first win of the season. Cherokee led 1-0 as Trevor Ligekis converted on the power play in the opening five minutes. Christian Anderson would get the equalizer about four minutes later with Stefano Sferra getting the assist. Urban would score an unassisted goal about thirty seconds later to give Township a 2-1 lead.

Chris Cozzan from Washington Township had a hat trick and Sam Amon from EEW added two goals as Team Simmonds defeated Team Giroux 9-5 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played before a packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Despite out-shooting Team Simmonds by 48-35, Team Giroux could not overcome the five goal first period. Before we were settled in our seats it was 3-0 in the first two minutes. Cozzan, playing on a line with teammate Brandon Balsama, who assisted on all three Cozzan goals, got things going on their first shift, Scott Veneziale, from Black Horse deflected a shot by Shawnee’s Alex Churchill and the lead was 2-0.

Vinny Mancini picked the perfect time to score his first varsity goal of the season as his rebound of a Boomer Miller's shot proved to be the game winner as Cherokee defeated Washington Township 3-2 and spoiled senior night at Hollydell. Both teams played well and the game had a playoff type atmosphere and could have been a preview of the finals, although I think Clearview might have a say.
