Cherokee Chiefs Articles 2014-2015
Christian Katsanos scored his first goals as a varsity player, and he did it in style scoring a hat trick as Cherokee pulled away from Williamstown 10-4 in action played at the Skate Zone. Scoreless in his previous games this season Katsanos picked a great time to break out with Cherokee missing 2 of its top scorers. Cody Roescher led the Braves with two goals. Cherokee led just 3-2 after one period and just 5-3 after two. Williamstown pulled to within 5-4 in the opening minute of the third period on Roescher’s second of the night, but Kyle Horner scored on a breakaway to restore the two goal lead at 6-4.

The nominees have been announced for the 2014-2015 Junior/ Senior Showcase game for the SJHSHL. Each team will have at least one player representing their club. The head coach from Washington Township, EEW and St Joe’s will coach one squad. The other squad will have the head coach from Cherokee, Mainland and Riverfront. Once again we will do a live draft on Thursday, January 29th at approximately 7:00PM. Each team will consist of 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies. In case some players cannot make the game, 3 alternates will be selected for each squad. The game will be played on Friday, February 6th at Skate Zone in Voorhees at 8:05PM. Congratulations to all the nominees!!
Kyle Horner scored with fourteen seconds left in the game, on the power play as Cherokee edged Moorestown 4-3 in American division action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Boomer Miller led the Cherokee offense with a hat trick. Miller got things going for Cherokee scoring a short-handed goal late in the period. John Yedman tied the score at 1-1 with his 15th goal of the season with just fourteen seconds left in the period.
Kyle Horner scored four goals and Boomer Miller added three goals and four assists as Cherokee defeated Black Horse 8-3 in SJHSHL action played at Hollydell on Friday night. The Chiefs took control early, scoring four goals in the first nine minutes. Horner netted three, including the game’s first goal. Miller made it 2-0 with just less than three minutes played and Horner scored two more goals minutes apart and the lead was 4-0. Kyle Ringheiser would score a power play goal for Black Horse late in the period to cut the advantage to 4-1.
As we begin 2015 and head towards the playoffs let’s take a look at the division leaders and where they should finish: American Division: Washington Township has a 3 point lead with two games in hand and has winnable games against Shawnee, EEW and HLV. They would seem to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the division. Cherokee is still the 4 time champ and needs to get there offense going if they want a 5th title. Clearview has proved they can play with anybody and could surprise here depending on the goaltending. Moorestown has struggled within the division going 1-6-1.
Donovan Haslett scored two goals to lead Washington Township over Cherokee 4-2 before a partisan crowd at Hollydell on Friday night. It was the junior forwards’ first multiple goal game for the varsity and he picked a good night to do it. Cherokee took a 1-0 lead at the five minute mark of the first period as Anthony Salvatore had the puck deflect off his body and past Township goalie Zachary Burkhardt for a 1-0 lead. Haslett would tie the game three minutes later scoring on a breakaway with Jarrett Strickon getting the assist. Township did a good job defensively on Boomer Miller, the league’s leading scorer and we began the second period all even.
Matt Cozzan scored twice and Ryan McMahon stopped 41 shots as Mainland defeated Cherokee 5-3 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees last night. Mainland led from the start as Colin Naumchik scored in the opening minute and Robert Lemons added his fourth of the season midway through the period for a 2-0 lead. McMahon, in by far his biggest game was tested early and often but stoned several Chiefs down low to keep it 2-0 after one period. Mainland, with their confidence growing each shift, would score two goals two minutes apart, early in the second period with Cozzan scoring unassisted and then Mackenzie Restle netting his team leading 19th goal of the season to increase the lead to 4-0.
Clearview and Cherokee were early into the third period when the Skate Zone lost power last night, with the View leading 2-1 and just starting a five minute power play when the rink went dark. Seconds later a row of back-up lights came on, but the game was suspended and will be picked up at a later date. In a game dominated by the View, having a power outage was the best answer for Cherokee as they could not generate any offense against Clearview goalie Mike Hughes. After a scoreless first period Clearview took a 1-0 lead with Nick Ramos getting the goal.
Tim Papagno stopped eighteen shots and kept Washington Township off the scoreboard until the final thirty seconds as Cherokee defeated Township 4-1 in Tier 1 action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kyle Horner led the Chiefs offense scoring two goals. Horner scored in the first minute of the game as Cherokee got out quickly, that would turn out to be the only goal of the period. Township would have two power play opportunities but Papagno made several big saves to keep them off the board.
Balanced scoring is a key against top teams and tonight Clearview had six different player score goals as they handed Cherokee their first loss of the season 6-3. Clearview jumped out early, as Robert Penrod scored a goal in the opening minute. Kyle McGovern made it 2-0 about three minutes later and when Anthony Dellerose scored for a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the game, things looked good for the View. But back came the Chiefs as John Butkus and Boomer Miller would get Cherokee to within 3-2 after one period.
