While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. Christian Romeo scored with fourteen seconds left in regulation to snap a 4-4 game and give Moorestown a 5-4 win over Cherokee in a Flyers Cup game played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The two rivals played back and forth all night, and it felt like we were going overtime until Romeo’s heroics. Jake Frankenfield gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead going end-to-end and lifting a backhander into the top shelf. That lead lasted all of thirty nine seconds as Sean Humes would tie the game at 1-1 for the Quakes. Early in the second period Luke Dobbs gave Moorestown a 2-1 lead but right after the faceoff Cherokee would get the equalizer as Trevor Ligeikis scored down low and we were knotted at 2-2.
Maximum Kuznetsov had a goal and three assists to lead the Eastern Vikings over Cherokee 5-4 in front of a packed house last night in Voorhees. The Vikings led from the start and held off a hard charging Chief team in the final seconds to win their first Championship since back in the early 2000’s. Goals by Jacob Findley and Connor Riley on the power play put the Vikings ahead 2-0 late in the first period. Trevor Ligekis would get a goal for Cherokee in the final fifteen seconds of the period and despite being outplayed Cherokee was only down 2-1.
Jona Carmany and Darren Hewitt each had a hat trick as Egg Harbor Township defeated Cherokee 8-3 in the JVB Championship. Cherokee led 2-0 in the first four minutes of the game on goals by Patrick Dugan and Ryan Deangelis. Jacob Feliciano got things going for EHT scoring at the eleven minute mark, less than two minutes later we were tied at 2-2 on the first of three by Carmany. Hewitt scored on the power play with one second left in the period and EHT took a 3-2 lead after one.
Luke Steel had a hat trick and Tommy Papa added two goals as Cherry Hill East defeated Cherokee 7-2 for the JVA Championship last night in Voorhees. East led from the start and despite being out-shot 48-27, took control of the game with four goals in the first period. Papa and Steele would score thirty five seconds apart in the game’s first six minutes to lead 2-0. Steel would convert on the power play midway through the period and East led 3-0. Cherokee would have some power play opportunities, with consecutive penalties called against East at the nine and ten minute mark but failed to capitalize.
The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Here's the full list and seeding for this year's Flyers Cup.
Jeremy Ambrose had two goals and two assists and Mike Deford added two goals as Cherokee defeated Eastern 6-3 to force a deciding game on Monday night in the Tier I double elimination tournament. Maxim Kuznetsov scored all three Eastern goals. Deford scored the only goal of the first period as he deflected a point shot by Jake Frankenfield to put the Chiefs up 1-0. Ambrose made the play along the boards as he kept the puck in and feed Frankenfield with Deford crossing in front and deflecting the shot into the net. Frankenfield had a strong game on defense as he shadowed Kuznetsov on the ice all night.
Cherokee JVA withstood a four goal third period by Washington Township and hung on for the 5-4 win in JVA playoff action at the Flyers Skate Zone. After a scoreless first period the Chiefs put up three goals in the second period with Josh Aubrey opening the scoring on the power play at the nine minute mark. Seconds later Jake Kelley made it 2-0 with Brendan Mohnacs getting the assist. Jeff Brna scored a late goal for the Chiefs and they took a 3-0 lead into the third period.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:
Hunter Ray scored thirty three seconds into overtime as Cherokee defeated Moorestown 5-4 and advanced to the finals to face Eastern. The loss eliminated Moorestown from the double elimination tournament. The Chiefs led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Cody Sherman and Jake Kelley after Bryan Bielawski had given Moorestown a 1-0 lead. Moorestown took a 3-1 lead early in the second period as they capitalized on a two-man advantage, scoring twice with Charlie Banquier getting the tying goal and Brandon Eberly putting them ahead 3-2.
