The teams traded goals in the first six minutes with Mike Deford opening the scoring for the Chiefs just two minutes into the game. Maglio tied the game at 1-1 just over one minute later.
Matt Hall scored on the power play midway through the third period to snap a 2-2 game and give Cherokee JVA a 3-2 win over Moorestown in playoff action played at the Voorhees Skate Zone on Sunday night. Mike O’Connell had given Moorestown an early 1-0 lead scoring in the opening minute of the game. Goals by Pete Cerria and Bryan Lafferty just over one minute apart gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. Moorestown would get the only goal of the second period from Kevin Hillman just forty three seconds in and we were tied at 2-2.
The Cherokee Chiefs took some time out from their busy hockey schedule to take on the Virtua Wings of Steel in a sled hockey game on Sunday at Voorhees Skate Zone. The Chiefs got into sleds for the first time and skated against the Wings in an effort to raise some money for the sled hockey team. With the Flyers Cup starting this week and JVA playoffs last night the Chiefs showed up with 14 players and Coach Scott McKay and Matt Pinto to attempt sled hockey and experience what these kids do. RJ Conrad, senior goalie for Cherokee was outstanding in nets as the Wings peppered him with shots.
Jeremy Ambrose scored both goals including the game winner in overtime as Cherokee defeated Eastern 2-1 to win the SJHSHL Tier I Championship before another standing room only crowd at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Just like they did on Friday night the Chiefs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Ambrose deflected a shot by Hunter Ray just 16 seconds into the game. Unlike Friday night however Eastern came right back forty four seconds later as Max Kouznetsov would get the equalizer and we were all tied at 1-1. Little did we know that no more goals would be scored in regulation.
With the game tied at 3-3 after two periods Cherokee JVA squad scored three goals in the final five minutes to pull away from Washington Township for a 6-3 victory in action played on Sunday night. Jeremy Ambrose had two goals and one assist and Sam Libetti added a goal and one assist as Cherokee defeated Eastern 4-3 in front of a standing room only crowd on Friday night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. With fans lined up over one hour prior to the game, and many of them were not able to get in, the Chiefs needed this game to force a deciding game on Monday night. Eastern had gone through the tournament undefeated and needed just to win tonight to repeat as champs. Coach McKay needed a big effort from his top line and strong defense and he got both tonight.
Andrew Lavdas stopped 28 shots as Cherokee defeated Moorestown 3-1 in front of a packed house on Monday night in an elimination game in the Tier I bracket. The Chiefs built a 3-0 lead through two periods largely on strong goal tending and the play of their second line, but had to hold on at the end as Moorestown would make some noise late in the game. The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game with Samuel Berger putting home a rebound of a shot by Mike Deford, with Jake Kelley also getting an assist.
In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey, we are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 award winners. We had many players that had a standout year which made it difficult to narrow down and in one category we actually picked two players to share the honors. Congratulations to all. The presentations will be prior to game 1 of the Championship round at Voorhees.
