2016-2017 Tier II & JVA Champions
While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. This year Tier I will consist of the following teams: Cherokee, Eastern, Moorestown and Washington Township in one conference and Shawnee, Kingsway, Williamstown, Egg Harbor and Lower Cape May in the other. Black Horse has dropped out of the league citing not enough players to fill a team.

David Cutler scored two goals and Jordan Hauler stopped 31 shots as Cherry Hill East defeated HLV 4-2 and win the SJHSHL Tier II A division championship at the Igloo on Friday night. Cherry Hill had to come out of the losers bracket and beat HLV twice, which they did and probably the biggest move was switching to Hauler who finished 4-0 in the tournament. Cutler gave East a 1-0 lead deflecting a shot by Thurston Schon at the six minute mark. Just over two minutes later HLV would tie the game at 1-1 on the first of two goals on the night by Gavin Gray.
Cherry Hill East converted on both power play opportunities in the second period and went on to defeat HLV 3-1 and force a deciding game in the Tier II A double elimination tournament. The two teams will battle again on Friday night at the Igloo. Ethan Chase for Cherry Hill and Gavin Gray for HLV swapped unassisted goals in the first period. East would get power play goals from Kyle Hill and Luke Steele, capitalizing on a two-man advantage and led 3-1 after two periods.
Luke Steel had a hat trick and Tommy Papa added two goals as Cherry Hill East defeated Cherokee 7-2 for the JVA Championship last night in Voorhees. East led from the start and despite being out-shot 48-27, took control of the game with four goals in the first period. Papa and Steele would score thirty five seconds apart in the game’s first six minutes to lead 2-0. Steel would convert on the power play midway through the period and East led 3-0. Cherokee would have some power play opportunities, with consecutive penalties called against East at the nine and ten minute mark but failed to capitalize.
The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Here's the full list and seeding for this year's Flyers Cup.
Cherry Hill East continues to ride the hot play of Jordan Hauler as he stopped 25 shots as they eliminated Shawnee 3-1 and will now play HLV in the championship round. HLV has not suffered a loss in the double elimination tournament so East will have to beat them twice. First with tonight’s win, East jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Jack Meath and Tommy Papa. Beginning the second period on the power play and a chance to go up three goals, Ryley Bergeson would score short-handed for Shawnee just ten second in to make it 2-1.
Luke Steele put home a rebound early in the first overtime as Cherry Hill East defeated Clearview 4-3 in an overtime thriller last night at Hollydell. Jordan Hauler got the start in nets for East and played outstanding as Cherry Hill built a 3-0 lead. Thurston Schon got things going early for Cherry Hill scoring in the first ninety seconds of the game. Jack Meath, who tallied two goals tonight, which doubled his season total, scored a power play goal in the final four minutes of the period and East took a 2-0 lead into the second period. Hauler was stopping everything as the View could not get one by him and with the period winding down Meath scored on a breakaway to give East a 3-0 lead.
Tommy Papa and Ethan Chase each had a hat trick as Cherry Hill East JVA defeated Moorestown JVA 8-2 in playoff action played in Voorhees. Cherry Hill took control with a four goal first period and never looked back. Goals by Chase, Papa and two from Ben Snyder gave East a 4-0 lead. Chase and Papa would connect early in the second period and the lead was 6-0.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:
Matt McIntosh stopped 27 shots and Anthony Poppalardo scored two goals as Shawnee upset Cherry Hill East in the opening round of the playoffs. Shawnee jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and never looked back. Tyler Feast opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game. Poppalardo and Daniel Venafro would add goals later in the period for Shawnee. Poppalardo scored the only goal of the second period and Shawnee was in command entering the third period.
