Cinnaminson Pirates Articles 2015-16

As we come to an end of the 2015-2016 season had a few final thoughts and observations about this season. Does anyone remember that just a few years ago Kingsway went winless and now the last 2 years have turned that program around? They took their lumps and beatings by joining the Tier I division, but it has paid off and they have also grown their fan base. With their win on Friday night against Township, Cherokee has become one of the most successful high school programs in our region. Love them or hate them, you cannot argue with their accomplishments, winning 6 out of the last 7 titles is a feat that might not be duplicated. Coach McKay has built a strong program and his team looks even stronger for next season.

After three periods, two five minute overtimes and 9 chances during a shootout Mainland and Cinnaminson were still tied as Gage Grist skated to the puck at center ice, he being the last shooter and he beat Cinnaminson net minder Stephen SanMartin for the game winning goal as Mainland won 7-6 in a thriller before a packed house at Hollydell. Mainland carried much of the play through the first two periods out-shooting Cinnaminson 29-9 but as usual the case was trailing. Jake Gimbel scored the only goal of the first period as Cinnaminson led 1-0. James Lowry would make it 2-0 in the opening minute of the second period scoring on a breakaway. The lead grew to 3-0 five minutes later as Lowry would get his second of the night, again on a breakaway and Cinnaminson led 3-0.

James Lowry scored three goals, two in the third period as Cinnaminson defeated Mainland 6-5 to force a deciding game in the double elimination tournament in Tier II in the SJHSHL. Mickenzie Restle led Mainland with two goals. The teams traded goals in the opening period which ended 3-3. Cinnaminson got goals from Lowry, Alex Richardson and Jordan Evans. Scoring for Mainland were Restle, Brad Kienzle and Jacob Graziotto. Mainland would get goals from Robert Lemons and Restle less than two minutes apart to jump ahead 5-3. Andrew Fehr would score a late goal for Cinnaminson to cut the lead to 5-4 after two periods.

Five different players scored for the Pirates and Stephen San Martin stopped 43 shots as Cinnaminson defeated Shawnee 5-4 and stayed alive on the double elimination tournament, the loss ended the season for Shawnee. James Lowry and Alex Richardson scored first period goals to give Cinnaminson a 2-0 lead after one period. After Dawson Hehring put the Pirates up 3-0 early in the second period, Shawnee would come storming back scoring three goals in a span of seven minutes, with Austin Ponzetti, Cody Charyk and Anthony Poppalardo getting the goals to tie the game at 3-3 after two periods.

Andrew Fehr’s second goal of the game at the three minute mark of overtime gave Cinnaminson a 5-4 win over St Joe’s in an elimination playoff game at the Igloo. Cinnaminson will now move on to meet Mainland, St Joe’s saw its season end with the loss. Each team launched 50 shots as both goalies were busy and played well, Stephen SanMartin for Cinnaminson and Colin Rogers for St Joe’s. Nick Frangos, in his final game for St Joe’s had a hat trick to pace the offense. Frangos gave St Joe’s a 1-0 lead at the six minute mark, but Cinnaminson came right back seconds later as James Lowry tied the game at 1-1.Frangos and Mike O’Brien exchanged goals late in the period and we were knotted at 2-2 after one.

The second annual NJ/DE Flyers cup will be held the week of March 14th. Cherokee and Washington Township will play at the Skate Zone in Voorhees with dates and times to be announced. Moorestown and Kingsway will travel to the Pond in Delaware Monday, March 14th, times to be announced. Please come out and support your team and congratulations to all the teams on being selected. Donovan Haslett’s shot from the point found its way into the net with just over three minutes left in the game to snap a 6-6 tie and give Team Giroux a 7-6 win in a very entertaining Junior/Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Kenny Weightman had a hat trick for Team Giroux; Nick Frangos led Team Vorachek also with a hat trick. The game was back and forth in the opening period with Weightman and Frangos exchanging goals in the opening minutes. After Weightman gave his squad a 2-1 lead, Frangos would tie the game midway through the period.

The SJHSHL will hold the Junior/Senior Showcase game this Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:30PM at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Admission is $5. The live draft was conducted last Thursday and 15 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies were selected for each team. Also 3 alternates were selected in case a selected player cannot make the game. Each team must have at least one player selected. So please come out and support these players. Here are the rosters of the two teams:

There will be a live draft on Thursday January 28th at 7:00 on our web site announcing the selections. There will be 15 forwards, 6 defenseman and 3 goalies selected for each team. Also 3 alternates will be picked in case a selected player cannot make the game. Each team must have at least one player selected. Please come out on Wednesday night and support these players. Cinnaminson scored three goals in the final nine minutes to rally from a 3-1 deficit and defeat Riverfront 4-3. Dawson Nehring scored twice for Cinnaminson as they denied Riverfront from winning their first game of the season. Patrick Willever scored the only goal of the first period as Riverfront took a 1-0 lead. Nehring tied the score at 1-1 early in the second period. Austin Wilk scored his third goal of the season midway through the period and Riverfront took a 2-1 lead into the third period.
