While the new season does not start until Monday, October 9th, here are a few items that we know. There will be two divisions, Tier I and Tier II. This year Tier I will consist of the following teams: Cherokee, Eastern, Moorestown and Washington Township in one conference and Shawnee, Kingsway, Williamstown, Egg Harbor and Lower Cape May in the other. Black Horse has dropped out of the league citing not enough players to fill a team.

The teams have been announced for the NJ/Delaware Flyers cup and soon it will begin its 4th Annual tournament the second week of March. This year there has been an increase in the number of teams participating. Here is the schedule for the Pond in Delaware with Salesianum playing Kingsway and Delaware Military Academy playing Township on Monday March 6th. Cherokee will host Moorestown and Eastern will host Appoquinmink at Voorhees also on March 6th. Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 8th with the Championship on Friday March 10th. Here's the full list and seeding for this year's Flyers Cup.
Colin Rogers stopped all 25 shots and Kevin Troy scored twice as St Joe’s defeated Cinnaminson 5-0 in Tier II playoff action at Pennsauken. Troy scored the only goal of the first period with under two minutes remaining with Kevin Glass getting the assist. Glass scored an unassisted goal early in the second period to put St Joe’s up 2-0. With Cinnaminson whistled for a five minute major, St Joe’s capitalized scoring two power play goals, with Troy and Dylan Gattone getting the goals and a 4-0 lead after two periods. Rogers would be tested late in the period as Cinnaminson went on the power play but could not get one past him.
Sean Conard had three goals as Riverfront defeated Cinnaminson 5-3 last night in playoff action at Voorhees. Trailing 3-2 going into the third period Riverfront responded scoring three times. Cinnaminson led 2-1 after one period on two goals by Connor Farkas sandwiched between one by Conard. Then Conard scored a short-handed goal early in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Dawson Nehring would score a power play goal for Cinnaminson late in the period and they led 3-2 after two.
Each year, we are pleased with the league allowing us to recognize several players and a coach and their outstanding contributions they have made for their team. With at least two to three players considered for each category, we have finalized our decision. In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey we honor players we feel stood out during the regular season and here are the players we selected and are pleased to announce the 2016-2017 award winners:
Cinnaminson built a 6-2 lead after two periods and held off a hard charging St Joes team to win 6-5 in playoff action at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Mark Kordes led the offense with two goals. After St Joe’s scored the first two goals of the game, one by Matt Sasher and one by Kevin Troy, the first of his three on the night, Cinnaminson would score the next six. Connor Farkas and Liam Mcgurrin scored four minutes apart to tie the game at 2-2. Goals by Mike Quattrone and Gino Sambucci sixteen seconds apart in the last minute of the period gave the Pirates a 4-2 lead after one.
Mike Moss broke a 2-2 game with ten minutes left in the game as Team Simmonds edged Team Giroux 3-2 in last night’s Junior/Senior Showcase game at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Having participated in the last few drafts Coach McKay has never won in this format, and while he wouldn’t admit that it bothered him, I got to believe that the success he has enjoyed over the last 8 years, not winning this game was probably bothering him to a degree. Trailing 2-0 on goals by Kevin Troy of St Joe’s and Zachary Faust of Black Horse, Team Simmonds would get a late goal in the period as Cody Charyk from Shawnee would score with Moss and Vinny Salerno getting the assists.
Vincenzo Salerno had a goal and three assists and Mike Moss scored twice and had two assists as Kingsway defeated Cinnaminson 5-1 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees this past Monday. Kingsway had a 2-0 lead after one period on a power play goal by Matt Kudless and a short-handed goal by Salerno. Geno Sambucci put Cinnaminson on the board five minutes into the second period getting credit for his sixth goal of the season and the lead was 2-1. Salerno would set-up Moss late in the period as Kingsway led 3-1 after two periods.
Brendan Blight scored five goals and Mainland scored seven times in the third period as they handled Cinnaminson 11-3 in early game action at Pennsauken on Friday night. Blight came into the game with six goals and had a career high scoring five and had three of the seven in the third period. Mainland led just 1-0 after one period on a goal by Jonathan Wilson, his fifth of the season and the third straight game he has scored a goal. Blight would get his first on the night at the three minute mark of the second period and the lead was 2-0.
This past Thursday night the SJHSHL held its Junior/Senior Showcase draft with Team Giroux selected by Coach Popiolek from Black Horse and Coach Busler from Cherry Hill East and making the selections for Team Simmonds were Coach McKay from Cherokee and Coach Vulpio from Clearview. We tossed a coin to see who would get first pick and Team Simmonds won the toss and selected Nick Ramos, Team Giroux would select Zachary Faust with their first pick. The forwards were chosen first, total of 12, followed by 6 defenseman each team, then 3 alternates each team and finally the goalies. Here are the rosters:
