2017-2018 JVB Champions
Trailing 3-2 entering the third period Clearview scored twice, including the game winner from Robert Gehringer with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to give Clearview a 4-3 win and the JVB Championship at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Sunday night. Kingsway had the lead for most of the first two periods, after Clearview scored at the six minute mark, Kingsway got goals from Bobby Johnson and Robbie Licciardello to take a 2-1 lead after the first period. Dominic Mendek, with John Francis getting the assist gave Kingsway a 3-1 lead with two minutes left in the second period.

Jack Amon scored two goals as Cherry Hill East stayed alive in the Tier II playoffs with a 3-1 win over Clearview in the double elimination tournament. The loss eliminated the View and ended their season. After a scoreless first period Amon gave East a 1-0 lead with less than five minutes left in the second period with Nick Carr getting the assist. Less than four minutes later Johnny Pearson would make it 2-0 with Thomas Papa getting the helper. Early in the third period the lead became 3-0 as Amon would score a power play goal with Pearson and Papa getting the assists.
Jake Nole scored with under two minutes left in the first overtime as Clearview ended Riverfront’s season with a 4-3 win in late game action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. The teams traded goals in the opening period with Maxwell Luz giving Riverfront a 1-0 lead midway through the period and Clearview getting a goal late in the period from Mike DeFelice to tie the game at 1-1 after one. Austin Wilk gave Riverfront a 2-1 lead forty seconds into the second period, but right after the center ice face-off, Chris Geary tied the score at 2-2 for Clearview. The goals came fifteen seconds apart.
In the continuing tradition here at SJIceHockey, we are pleased to announce the 2017-2018 award winners. We had many players that had a standout year which made it difficult to narrow down and in one category we actually picked two players to share the honors. Congratulations to all. The presentations will be prior to game 1 of the Championship round at Voorhees.
HLV built a 5-2 lead and held off a fast charging Clearview squad in winning 5-4 in Tier II playoff action in Pennsauken. The teams traded goals in the first period with Matt Kilkenny giving HLV a 1-0 lead early and Eli Howey tying the game for Clearview late in the period. HLV took control in the second period getting goals from Ryan LaSalvia and Matthew Savvas on the power play and took a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Thomas Rockey snapped a 1-1 tie with just less than five minutes left in regulation as Clearview defeated St Joe’s 2-1 in the playoff opener for both clubs. Rockey, who split his time on varsity and the JVB team this season, went top shelf from the slot for the game winner to beat Michael Neal who stopped 33 shots and kept Clearview off the board on five power play opportunities. Jason Baselice gave St Joe’s a 1-0 lead after a scoreless first period.
Shawnee is making its first appearance in recent memory and Moorestown finds itself the top seed after a 15-1-2 season. The games are scheduled to be played starting on March 12th as Cherokee will host DMA at 8:45 at Voorhees Skate Zone. Moorestown will begin play on Tuesday March 13th at Voorhees at 7:00. Kyle Peters scored one minute into the overtime period as Team Simmonds rallied from a three goal deficit to defeat Team Giroux 9-8 in the Junior-Senior Showcase game held at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Max Kuznetsov led Team Giroux with six goals. Dominic Garrozzo had three goals and four assists and Kyle Peters added a hat trick for Team Simmonds. Luke Dobbs opened the scoring giving Team Giroux the early 1-0 lead. Dennis Campbell tied the game at 1-1 at the five minute mark.
Cherry Hill East ended the regular season with a 3-1 win over Clearview in the season finale and finished atop the Tier II bracket with a 17-2-2 record. Johnny Pearson, Jack Amon and Sean McKenna scored the goals for Cherry Hill East with Christopher Geary spoiling the shut-out for Luke Martini scoring with less than three minutes left in the game. East will look to defend their Tier II title, and once again their biggest threat will be the team they beat in the finals last year, HLV.
The 2017-2018 SJHSHL draft for the Junior-Senior Showcase game was conducted on Tuesday night as the coaches for Team Simmonds and Team Giroux gathered to make their selections. Team Giroux, who will be coached by Daryl Sporer from Moorestown and assisted by Scott Busler from Cherry Hill East won the toss and selected Max Kuznetsov from Eastern with their first pick. Team Simmonds who will be coached by Scott McKay from Cherokee and assisted by John Francis from Kingsway selected Dominic Garrozzo from Washington Township.
