In keeping with our tradition, SJIceHockey.com is pleased to announce our annual hockey awards given to the players we feel stood out. This year was more difficult than in the past as we had many players in all our categories, but after many discussions here are the selections:

Jesse Gimbel scored three goals as Delran began the playoffs with a 5-4 win over Clearview in the opening game played at Hollydell. Ed Moore led Clearview with two goals. After a scoreless first period Gimbel put Delran up 1-0 scoring in the opening minute of the second period. Ray Norfo made it 2-0 at the ten minute mark as he picked up a loose puck in the slot and found the back of the net. Marc Horowitz was strong in goal for Delran and kept Clearview off the board until the five minute mark when Mike Vulpio scored a short-handed goal to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was the first of the year for the young defenseman.

Five different players scored as Cinnaminson defeated Delran 5-2 at the Igloo on Friday night. With the win Cinnaminson clinched fourth place in the division, as they hold the tie-breaker against Holy Cross. The game was tight heading into the third period as Cinnaminson led just 2-1 on goals by Kevin Rafferty and Sean Gault with Randy Khinkis scoring for Delran. Both goaltenders were solid in nets especially Marc Horwitz who had stopped 20 of 22 shots. Kevin Roth, while facing just 13 shots, kept Delran at bay as they were 0-5 on the power play through two periods.

With the discussions until the wee hours of the morning, the SJHSIHL Junior-Senior Showcase, to be held at Hollydell on Friday February 5th has been announced. With the teams broken up into two teams, North and South, the following is how the two teams will be divided:

Bob Campbell had three goals and Eric Mitchell and Alex Stewart added two goals each as Clearview recorded their first win of the season beating Delran 8-6 ah Hollydell. Delran, led by Jesse Gimbel with a hat trick is still winless as well, jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Clearview bounced back. Having watched a fair amount of Clearview games, despite being winless, the effort has been there and we haven’t sensed any disruption, although I’m sure there was frustration. The last regular season win was January 2009 against Township.

Louie DeAngelo scored five goals as Washington Township had no problem with winless Delran 10-0 in SJHSIHL action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Township started out slow but Eddie Sarin got things going at the nine minute mark scoring on the power play. From there Washington Township would score four more goals over the next seven minutes, two more on the power play and led 5-0 after the first period. Besides two by DeAngelo, Township got goals from Dylan Smith and Jonathan Smith as well.

Jonathan Ruiz snapped a 1-1 game early in the third period scoring short-handed to propel Williamstown to a 4-2 win over Delran. The win put Williamstown at 5-5, while Delran is still searching for their first win of the season. Tyler Adams scored the lone goal of the first period as Delran led 1-0. Anthony Derbyshire tied the game at 1-1 scoring on the power play five minutes into the second period.

Eddie Sarin scored four goals as Washington Township had little problem with Delran in a 10-1 victory. The win was the sixth straight for Township in front of a sparse crowd and gave the Minutemen a three point lead in the division. Louie DeAngelo opened the scoring early in the first period on a nice drop pass from Sarin. Kevin Mello made it 2-0 scoring his second goal of the year just about three minutes later. Delran did not generate much offense, but when they did Mike Stoever, starting just his fourth game in nets, was there to shut them down.
