EEW - Eastern, Cherry Hill East & Cherry Hill West 2013-2014
Normally competing as rivals in the SJHSHL, these 2 teams have come together to fight MS as they played the 2nd annual Score for a Cure exhibition game at Voorhees this past Sunday, April 6th, with all the proceeds going towards the research to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. This game wasn’t about who won or lost, although Riverfront did win 6-3, but more about people uniting to raise money and awareness for a great cause. This event was born through participation of the Delran hockey team that had been participating in a tournament in Pennsylvania called Wink for Pink, a fundraiser for research and treatment in the fight against breast cancer.

Coming into this season there was much uncertainty with the SJHSHL participating in the annual Flyers Cup as the rules were changing and all teams that were invited had to be sanctioned. With none of our teams sanctioned, things looked bleak and for the first time in recent memory it appeared that South Jersey would not be represented in the Flyers Cup. But thanks to the efforts of Rob Baer, manager of the youth hockey program with the Flyers and a few board members we were all able to realize the birth of the NJ/DE Flyers Cup. For the first time impure teams were invited to participate, moving forward I’m not sure that will always be the case, but it was this year and one team, Black Horse came within a few minutes of advancing into the finals.
Black Horse forward Kyle Frasier had three goals and two assists to lead the North All-Stars to a 12-4 win over the South All-Stars in the Junior-Senior Showcase game played at Voorhees. Mike Katz added two goals and one assist for the North. Katz opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, but the South came back just over one minute later to tie the game at 1-1with Shawnee’s Alex Churchill getting the goal and Sean Burnham from Kingsway the assist. The North would score the next three goals, Frazier scored unassisted on a breakaway for a 2-1 lead, then late in the period goals by Moorestown’s John Yedman and St Joe’s Paul Petrongolo ninety second apart gave the North a 4-1 lead heading into the second period.
Colin Donahue and Cole Blackley each scored two goals as Lower Cape May defeated EEW 5-2 IN THE JVB2 Championship game played at the Voorhees Skate Zone. The win capped a season where Lower Cape May finished first during the regular season and completed the task by winning the Championship. Blackley gave Lower Cape a 1-0 lead in the last four minutes of the first period. EEW would respond scoring twice in a span of thirty seconds as Hayden Zuber would get the equalizer and then Steve Brodzik would give the EEW the 2-1 lead after one period.
Cherokee completed its successful season with a thrilling double overtime win as Damon Branche scored in the final minute to give Cherokee a 1-0 win over the EEW. Neither team could score through 54 minutes of play, with EEW having 5 power play opportunities and failing to capitalize, including one 2 man advantage. But the story tonight was the play of both goaltenders. Anthony Maddox for the Chiefs and Mike Verdicchio for the EEW were both outstanding and both pitched a shutout until Branche scored his goal thanks to a nice drop pass from John Butkus.
Hayden Zuber scored two goals as EEW defeated Clearview 2-1 and advanced to the JVB finals. The EEW will play Lower Cape May at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. After a scoreless first period, Zuber broke through for EEW at the nine minute mark of the second period with Braden Hawcroft getting the assist. Then with his team on the power play, Zuber connected for his second goal of the night, once again with Hawcroft getting the assist and EEW led 2-0 after two periods.
Trailing 3-1 early in the third period, EEW rallied with three unanswered goals to defeat Clearview 4-3 in JVA Playoff action at Hollydell. Owen McNally got the game winner, twenty one seconds after Andrew Bowen had tied the game at 3-3. Clearview had built a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Jake Sholders and Justin Hughes. EEW took advantage of a two-man-advantage early in the second period with Zaire Bryant getting the goal to bring the EEW to within 2-1.
Having just completed the first draft for the Junior-Senior Showcase game and having posted the selections as they were happening, wanted to let you see the whole roster. The game will be played on Friday night March 7th at the Skate Zone in Voorhees at 9:30, if the time changes we will post in the forum.
Chris Kilcourse scored three goals to lead Black Horse JVA to a 5-2 win over EEW in the regular season finale for both teams. The sophomore leads the team in scoring with 22 points, 13 goals and 9 assists and could be an important part of the varsity next year with the program graduating 11 seniors. Black Horse took control in the first period, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on two goals by Kilcourse, one late in the period on the power play and a goal by Matthew Marchese, his fourth of the season.
Mario Leone scored with less than four minute remaining as Washington Township JVB team and EEW skated to a 4-4 tie last night at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Steve Brodzik and Brendan McCafferty scored two goals each for EEW and Samuel Strippoli led Township with two goals. The teams traded goals in the first period with Strippoli giving Township a 1-0 lead at the six minute mark and Brodzik tying the game at 1-1in the final minute of the period.
